Bed covers: What's good and what's not?

Well, I did a search and the newest post for this topic was over a year old. I don't want to play "thread necromancer" and bring to life something that old since I'd prefer more up to date recommendations.

I'm looking at some of the Pace Edwards gear, specifically the Jackrabbit electronic bed cover and the locking tailgate for both of my trucks. I'd like to get one for the wife's truck so that she doesn't get the groceries wet or have them blow out the back of the truck, and I'd like to have some security with mine since my truck is not only the toyhauler and I'd like to be able to secure any cargo in the bed but I'm also going to upgrade my air tank and compressor for my train horns next summer and don't want it visible.

What I'd like to know is what is out there that's good and what should I avoid.

Thanks folks!

My buddy put a Pace Edwards non electric roll top on his truck & overall he's happy with it. He had a problem in the beginning with it, i thing a bolt or screw loosened up inside the area where it rolls up into causing the top to get messed up a bit. They replaced it for him though. things he's not happy with is that its not totally water tight & you loose a little bed space against the cab where it rolls up. I have an oudercover solid top on mine & love it. If I need to put something tall in the bed it comes off easily.

There's a good chance that I'm going to lose some bed space with the larger air tank I want to install anyway, so that isn't a big concern. I'd like to be able to mount the air tank under the bed but I'm also trying to keep my options open if this doesn't work. If I have to go for an in-bed mount, I'd rather have the roll up canister and the tank as close as possible so that I can minimize the amount of space I'll end up loosing. I'm figuring that stacking the tank and roll up canister will end up being the way these are installed, I just want to make sure it looks good and gives me the functionality that both the wife and I need.

I like the Diamondback, but for my needs it just won't work. Some of the requirements are ease of use, access to cargo, and the "wife factor" ..... so if its something she can't get to work for her, "Household 6" will be chewing on my backside.

I have the Roll N Lock cover on my 03 and a 22 gal fuel tank under the roll up canister. Never take the cover off and in fact hardly ever take the 5th wheel out of the bed just close the cover over it. I lost just shy of one foot of bed space with my setup.

I have the Extang Revolution. It took some tweaking to get the tension right, but overall it's a good looking cover that I can roll up or down in seconds. I can remove it in about 20 seconds, re-install in 35 seconds or so.

Retrax. 5 years, 134,000 miles, and it's still operating like new.

UnderCover - So far, it is weather proof, can be walked on , and easily removable. They are reasonably priced.

I bought my truck used and it came with a Roll-n-Lock on it. For security I think it's fine, but mine is NOT WEATHERPROOF AT ALL. Not sure if I'm overlooking some adjustment that needs to be made or something, but since I already know whatever is back there is going to get wet, I'd rather have my 1 foot of bedspace back. I really want a fiberglass cap so I can put stuff back there long term and not worry about it getting wet. Anyone want a used Roll-n-
Lock?

I have had a Pace Edwards electric roll up cover on the 1500 for 5 or so years. I have had to replace the plastic gears twice and finally just gave up on it. I manually open and close it after removing the motors. Never has been weather proof so I made sure nothing was on the floor of the bed that I didn't want getting wet. I won't be getting another because of those reasons. On another note I did find the customer service helpful even after the unit was out of warranty.

X2 for the Diamondback. It works perfectly and I have the HD which holds 1600lbs on top. Simple latches front and back with the Pace electric tailgate lock and I am golden, have never had to remove it for a load. I have had 15 bails of hay on top with my saddles and gear in the bed. It comes apart in 3 pieces of 43lbs or less for removal. I love it and get a lot of positive comments about it.
With all of that said, it was a little pricey but well worth it to me.

I also have the Diamondback cover, and although it is a bit pricy, it runs about the same as a reg. canopy. and with the locking tailgate connected to the auto door locks, it's good and solid.
