Ball joint complication
Ball joint complication
I was doing my ball joints on Saturday, driver side went off without a hitch ( I mean it wasn't easy but I got it done)
When I go to the right side all things came to a halt. First I couldn't get the rotor off, so I decided to try getting the hub off with the rotor, using the power steering press method.
No go. It didn't even budge. Any ideas? Next step is paying someone to do it. But I really would rather do it myself.

An air hammer... Yes, why didn't I think of that sooner! Anti-seize is my friend! I coated everything on the driver side that was metal-on-metal that wasn't a thread so if I ever have to get in there later it will be "easier" things should just fall apart right?
Been there....Done That!
Best advise I got from someone on this forum was.....
" Put down the pocketbook, and hang on that steering wheel until you hear something "crack" like a rifle going off."
So I did this and "bang" I popped the hub off.
The mechanic at my garage loosens the four bolts holding the hub off about 1/4" and then goes into the parking lot and does donuts! The force on the front wheels pops the hub every time I'm told.........Interesting!

When my aluminum rims "glue" themselves to the hubs thats what i do to break em free... only i back the nuts off 1/8th inch...

I replaced the rear rotors on my truck a few weeks ago. The left rear was frozen, and really stuck on there.
I used a good penetrating oil - PB Blaster - and sprayed it carefull around the lugs, so it would through the hole and get behind the rotor. I jacked up the rear, loosed the lug nuts just a little, and ran the speedometer up to about 40mph. Then I slammed on the brakes. After about 2-3 tries, it finally came loose.
You could do the same thing in the front, jacking up all 4 corners.
I'v seen pelpe break them loose the same way, except rolling in the driveway.

My budie did his 01 with 200K on it last summer. No amount of power stearing was getting that hub off there. He actualy cranked on the PS so hard it spit most of its fluid out. He had a freind under there with an air chisel at the same time and a BFH and no go. They wound up cutting the ball joints with a saws all and then taking the hub to a 40+ ton press we have at work and that almost wouldent do it. He stalled it out a couple times before it finaly poped and came apart.
