Ash tray won't close

The ashtray on my son's 03 won't stay closed. The spring still works, but it does not stay shut when you push it up closed. I don't see anything broken. Has anyone had this happen, and what did it need? (thanks!)

I had this happen in my '03. I was at a salvage yard and picked up another ashtray. I popped the old one out to put the new one in. While popping it out, it started working again. No problems since. I recc. pulling it out and cleaning it. Hope it works.

You've got something under the tray. I had the same problem, some change had popped out of the ashtray and got underneath. I don't remember the trick to pulling the ashtray out though.

I bet he does have change in there, because that's exactly what he uses it for, and it looked pretty full. Thanks! Now- does anyone know how to get the ash tray out??

When it is open, pull up on it towards the sky, it is being held in by a little clip type thing molded right into the door of the ashtray, if that makes sense. But be careful because they can break off... That is what I do when I get that problem...

I pulled out the tray part. There was nothing dirty, and no change or anything else between it and the actual part that swings out. The actual part that swings out shuts perfectly without the tray in it. When I re-install the tray, it will not stay clipped shut. ???

I just pulled out the tray that the ashes or in this case- the change goes in. Are you talking about the part that actually flips opened? That part closes fine when the inside tray is taken out. (I'm not sure how to get that part out.)
