With all the talk of 2 DIN Nav systems, pics of my 04 install
Just somewhat finished the install of my Pioneer AVIC-D3 in my 04, all you guys out there with in-dash units in your 06's made me jealous. Took me about 3-4 nights (2-3 hours a night) to get it all in and hooked up. All in all it was worth it. Went to the local car audio shop to see if they had any 2 din brackets I could hack up and modify to work and they flat out told me I couldn’t do it and that everything was "all custom" and they have "perfsonals" to do it, I just turned around and walked out. So here are my pictures

Pics of the radio in the dash after cutting the upper part of the inside dash. Notice the "Custom" brackets that the guy at the car audio shop told me perfsonals make, yeah its just pieces off a $7 sheet of sheet metal from home depot.

Pic of the back of the dash cover to show how much I had to trim away to get it to fit.
And now the money shot of it in and the dash put back together

To cover the holes I took some more of that sheet metal and cut little pieces to go on each side then hit it with a wire brush on my drimal to give it that brushed look, I wanted to go all the way around but it was to close to the bends and I was tired so this will do tell I get around to filling the holes with plastic and glassing the whole thing, or a complete dash cover(depends on how creative I feel). I also need to get around to hooking up the back up camera that it came with. I’m thinking of moving my 7 pin hook up from next to the license plate to under the bumper and using that hole to mount a plate with a hole for the cam. Like I said it’s only somewhat finished so let me know what yall think or if you have any questions, I know there where some other guys out there with 05 and under wanting to do the same thing so this is why I posted the pics.

Ill just say that you can hear crickets cherping when I open my wallet now, I got it from crutchfield when they where giving away free backup cams when every purchase of an AVIC D3 it was a prety good deal for $999. I had to buy the IPod and XM adapters seprate and together they where like $80.
I finally finished it this weekend with the install of my XM adapter and finishing out the face plate. I took off the sheet metal strips and glued small pieces of plactic in the hole and then I found some vinyl carbon fiber to cover the dash with. All in all Im pleased with the out come, I didnt do the greatest job with the plastic and vinyl but I can live with it for now. I did find out that you allmost need 4 hand to do the vinyl work so I eneded up with a couple of small wrinkles but I think for my frist time its good. If I get a wild hair later on I might pull it off and rework the plastic and vinyl but Im so tired of pulling off that dash Ill hold off for now.

Looks great, im not a huge carbon fiber fan, but I think it looks 10xs better than the sheetmetal, only because it feels more factory or like an aftermarket overlay over the stock bezel.
I think the only thing I would do different(if I had the time) would be to glue the plastic pieces on like you did, but smooth it out and paint it black to match the factory interior, more of a challenge, but would probably look pretty good.
