4 new all season michellin's and new vibration...

I had 4 brand new michellins installed last month and it seems the truck has new steering column/cab vibrations now between 30 and 40, then again between 50 and 65mph.

The tires are Michellin XRADIAL LT 265/70R17 121/118R

Things seem to smooth out at ~70 but man, these are extremely loud.

I brought it back for them to check the balanceing and they said the fronts needed to be re-balanced. Supposedly they did it.

Anyone have any ideas? It did have new vibrations before I had them changed. I figured it was the tires because they needed to be replaced, so I bit the bullet.

I recently had new brakes put on and an exhaust system. I was thinking maybe something in the exhaust had come loose. I don't know.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

DT

If the steering wheel has a shake its the fronts if it feels like your but is shaking its the rears, I always buy michelin`s as they seem to be the smoothest tire, check your wheel nuts and make sure they are torc`ed down, and I would jack the front end up and make sure theres no play in the front end.thats all I got

I have a 2005, 2500 dodge diesel, the tires i run are:
Michelin 265/70R17 load range E, LTX A/S
These tires ride and drive great, old truck is heavy but drive very good.

Tires are smooth at all speeds.
I have had good luck with this brand of tire.

maybe you need to have another dealership rebalance them, that can be a problem,
what about your driveshaft, is it tight no loose play, that can make the truck vibrate.

Let us know what you find wrong.
look at the build date on the tires, they could be old!!!!!!

could have a bent wheel, do you have stock steel wheels or aftermarket wheels?

Get the truck up to a speed higher than where the vibration starts. Put it in neutral and let it coast down through the vibration speed. If the vibration changes, it's drive line. If it stays exactly the same, it's suspension.

If you think it's tires, swap them front to rear. If nothing changes, it's probably not tires.

"It did have new vibrations before I had them changed. "

Sounds like a pre-existing condition, made worse or more noticable with the new tires.

I do know that if it's vibrating and I let off the pedal so I'm coaasting, it smooths right out.

I found another thread on here suggesting that it could be a bad U joint ( or more than one ). People on that thread described exactly the same symptoms my truck is having.

So I'm bringing it into the shop and will give them a heads-up to check that first.

Thanks a lot for your reply.

That usually indicates a drive line, and not a suspension/tire problem.

You're on the right track. U-joints and center bearing seem to be the most common problem. If they're bad long enough, the vibration will also eat the bearings in the differential and the rear of the transmission. That usually causes a leak in those areas, but not always.

Update:
I had the ujoints replace, 2 in the rear, and that fixed the problem.

Truck is now smooth as silk and registering a lot more mileage on the overhear to boot!

Thanks again everyone.
