2007 5.9 exhaust replacement... what sounds good?
I had a pretty unique exhaust on my previous truck...'04.5 regular cab. It was the factory 4 inch exhaust straight piped (no cat OR muffler) but I also had a 2nd gen exhaust manifold. Its definitely a do-it-yourself deal because it is slightly more complicated then just slapping on a different manifold (i.e. you need a longer turbo oil drain line, different down pipe, have to modify intercooler boot) but in the end that truck was the best sounding 3rd gen I ever heard. Really nice growl and deep like a 2nd gen. It was pretty loud but that manifold really took alot of that 3rd gen "rasp" out of the sound.
It changes the tone of the exhaust. It didn't make it completely sound like a 2nd gen but there was quite a noticeable difference and it was a fun project. Basically the 2nd gen manfold is more symmetric. 3 cyls on one side 3 cyls on the other and they meet in the middle. The 3rd gen has 2 cyls on one side, 4 on the other so its not symmetric...I have no idea why that changes the sound but it does.
