2006 time to upgrade my Sound system
Ok the next aspct of my truck I'm changing is the factory sound. I don't have the infinity system just your base stuff. I want to know what you guys are running more so speaker wise vice head units. Should/Can I put small speakers in the dash like the infinity system has? Is the wiring even there? What should I run in my doors? I don't need a crazy loud system but I would like clearer sound and a touch chrisper bass. Please help!
i got the base stuff also. i put kenwoods up front and polks in the rear. But there wasnt enough bass. so i put a 12 sub under driver side rear seat and hooked up a switch to the amp so i dont have hard bass at 5 in the morning. i wired the rca input to the driver door speaker. I did that so i can keep my factory radio which is the REC NAV. After dialing it in it sounds great.
I'm a big fan of the Kappa stuff, dont you have to run an amp though to get the most out of them? What are in our doors? will 6x9's fit?
6x9s will fit, I had to trim some of the metal away on the door though. Not a big deal and well worth the effort. After I cut away I just hit the bare metal with primer to protect. I do run an amp on all of mine though. The front doors and dash tweets are in parallel on their respective channels, and the rear doors on their own channels. Same amp powers the sub on a 5th channel. Very good definition in all ranges with these speakers, I am very happy. I have never ran these speakers without an amp, dont think I would either. Not just because they are kappas, but because I think the sound and clarity of amplified speakers is much better than what most head units are capable of. The factory stuff wasnt anything to brag about though, at least on my truck, the speakers were horrible.
i do have one issue with my setup. When playing a cd if i max out my factory unit it will cutout. I have to shut it off then turn it back on. Max 38 -cutoff but if i put at 37 no issues. im thinking my factory unit doesnt like the aftermarket speakers.

Actually you'll probably hear the biggest difference from upgrading the head unit vs speakers. Don't get me wrong aftermarket speakers are better than stock, but the head unit will drive that goodness.
I've been fighting myself for a while about the speakers in my truck. I'm trying to hold out for a new head unit w/Nav.

I replaced my stock head unit with a Kenwood and added a 4x75 watt Rockford Fosgate amp to power all four door speakers. It made a huge difference in the sound quality. Needs more base though.
I plan on adding subs and replacing the front door speakers and possibly bridging the amp to power the fronts. The truck has Infinity Reference speakers now from the previous owner. They suck.
This all started when I wanted to run my iPhone through the stock deck. The new kenwood makes it easy to shuffle through the music list. But it wont operate Pandora, that still needs to be operated through the iPhone. No big deal though. I think the upscale model kenwoods will control Pandora as well.

I replaced my factory speakers with Infinitys.... Left the stock head unit in place because I didnt want to upset the 06 wiring and couldnt find an aftermarket that really fit the eyebrows in the dash. The 06 models don't seem to need help in having interior electrical "glitches".... I added the ipod thru the auxillary jack... Then I installed an MTX custom enclosure that houses two 10" subs with a built in amplifier. The enclosure is formed to fit under the rear seat, the amp is built in, and it works off of the signal wires for the two rear door speakers... It REALLY sounds GREAT!!!.. Put a rich crips bass into the system...
Kappa 3way 6x9s in the front. Kappa 2way 5 1/4s in the rear powered by a fosgate p400 4way and Kenwood 5120 HU. A Jl Audio Stealthbox under the rear pass seat powered by a Fosgate p300 single Chan amp pushing the single ten in the SB sounds pretty good and is a pretty standard setup. The only thing I change is mabey components in the front doors. Make sure you head unit comes with 3 preouts front/rear/sub.... Mine did not and complicated things. Good luck do a.search there are some great threads...
