20 mpg out of 6.7
20 mpg out of 6.7
Hello, I am brand new to the forum and need some advice.
I am trying to decide if I should buy a new gas truck or a diesel. I can get around 20 mpg out of a new gas truck, but I don't think I would have the longevity of the diesel. I also need to tow my boat and would like to get a small travel trailer some day. Can I achieve 20 mpg, or maybe at least 19, by taking the emissions equipment off the 6.7? Are there any inexpensive mods that would help me get there?
Thanks.

I had an 08 Megacab 6.7l truck. I deleted the DPF and simply unplugged the EGR. I just talked to the new owner yesterday and he told me he is getting over 22 hwy mpg. You will NEVER get anywhere near this with all the emissions stuff in place and functional. I was getting 16mpg running around town in that truck too. I get that in my current truck too...
There are other factors to think about than just MPG. I went from a Suburban w/350, to the Ram and never want to go back. I figured with the increased efficiency of the diesel, gas would have to be $0.60 cheaper to break even. I went from 12-13 city and 16 mpg to 14 city and (almost) 20 hwy. My boat is somewhere around #6500 and the suburban would never get over 10 mpg towing. Towing the same boat I now get 12-14 depending how much of a hurry I'm in. I could not use the cruise because the transmission would downshift on an overpass even with overdrive locked out. Now I can sit back and relax. Another thing with a 3/4 ton truck I dont have the overpass wiggle, you know towing in a crosswind and the overpass temporarily blocks the wind.

Foxborough,
You are right. Part of my reason for wanting a diesel is because the mpg when I tow my boat is horrible in my gas truck. It's so bad it makes me not want to go fishing! My boat is only about 3500 pounds and the truck seems to really struggle with that weight, especially at anything appoaching 70 mph. I know my current truck would not do well at all with a TT as it can barely handle the boat.

I wish I got anywhere near that with my 5.9. At normal highway speeds of 70-75 mph I get maybe 13 mpg. If I keep it around 60, it will be in the mid 17's. The G56 is geared so short that it just doesn't do well unloaded. It IS up a bit since adding the Smarty, but no more than 1-2 mpg. Being a dually doesn't help any either.

Im an outside salesman and have an 09 chevy 1500 2wd extended cab with the 5.3 for my company truck and its suppose to get 20 mpg, but over 85000 miles it has yet to get it. My driving is all highway mostly on two lane roads where the speed limit is 55 and it does good to get 17.5 and most of the time it gets closer to 16.5. I only drive 5mph over the speed limit and I have talked to other people with similar trucks who say the same thing. So dont count on these trucks to get the 20mpg that they claim.
My HEMI 1500 4X4 with NO Ethanol Gas gets 18+ on the Highway.... With E10 15.5 at best.... Towing = 10 to 11 MPG..... Boat or 25' Camper..... The 06 2500 Cummins with G56 got 18.5 Highway and 13 to 14 MPG towing..... Boat weight is around 4500 pounds and the Camper is about the same loaded.
** 95% of my driving with the new truck is loaded for hunting and fishing....... Should have kept the Cummins
