17" wheels!!!!
17" wheels!!!!
What are some of you doing about tires for these awful 17" wheels?? I tow a big boat and a 36' 5th wheel at times. This should eliminate those big "swampers" for me although I must admit that even at 57 years old I am tempted!! The Michelins are doing fine but just look so small in the wheel wells. Thanks for the suggestions ahead of time.<br><br><br>'03,Patriot Blue,QC,4x4,HO,6sp., Silver star lights, 3.5 months old and 17,000 trouble free miles.
Re:17" wheels!!!!
I bought the Michelin tires...the truck just happened to come with them.
Seriously though...Michelin is top of the line. My truck is a 2WD and I don't linger off of the streets too often....think I'll just stick with what's on there. They don't look too small to me.

315/70R17 BFG AT's. These fit, look great, have a higher weight capacity, are quieter, and improve the ride over the Michilens. Downside is your speedo will be off. Saw one with the same tire in a 285 that looked ok also. If you PM an email I can send you a picture.
Re:17" wheels!!!!
They don't look small on a 2wd, since it's lower. I'd like to find a decent looking 17" rim and then go with the 315's.....I've considered the 315's becasue the prices are quite cheap, but they look too balloony (is that a word?). Maybe 18"??

Michelin's vs BF Goodrich. At one time Goodrich was an American Company. However it is only a brand name now. BFGoodrich is now a brandname owned by none other than Michelin. Michelin is their top of the line brandname carrying the corporate banner. Uniroyal is another brand name owned by none other than Michelin. Michelin has manufacturing plants in most western countries. It may say Goodrich or Uniroyal but they are made in a Michelin owned plant, one that makes Michelins also. I bought Michelins several years ago that were made in their Israel plant.
Remember Bridgestone and Firestone and Ferd. Bridgestone owner and operator, Firestone, just a brand name, and not their top of the line brand as was evident by their tread separation problems.

Dont forget that when a company brands something they often place products so as not to compete with itself. Michilin does not have a comparable tire. IMO they BFG is a better tire in every way than the michilen the truck came with. Even my kids noticed the improved ride, despite its incresed size it's quieter, has proven to have much better traction, and looks better. That means more to me than having the word Michilen on the sidewall.

Don't get yourself something less than good quality, just because of some foreign national identity....<br><br>There's very little, if anything, nowadays that can be branded Made in USA (only) or Made in Upper Armpit (only). Most corporations are multinational; The 03 3500 I'm waiting for was made in Mexico; Toyota's can be made in, I think, Kentucky...& so on...<br><br>I've had 5 sets of BFG AT's & believe them to be the best! They last well, they have excellant dry & wet traction & great floatation when I go on the beach--<br><br>imho

Well, D rated won't work for me. Gotta be 10 ply and E rated and only Michelin is so far. Except that Wally World has a tire, forgot the name, that is 10 ply and E rated and has a nice tread to it. So, when the Michelins won't go South any longer, if Les Schwab has not had the Japanese make a 10 ply E rated Toyo tire, then will go with Wallys<br><br>Hunter
Re:17" wheels!!!!
Check the load rating on the tire on the bfg website; the 315/70-17, D-rated tire carries 3195 lbs - just about the same as the E-rated oem tires, if memory serves me..<br><br>http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/asset...rain_ta_kd.pdf<br><br>
