Sunroof problems
Sunroof problems
Hello all. Looking for a little help today regarding my sunroof. Awhile back it started making a ratcheting sound when closing and soon it stopped opening altogether. It will still vent open but that is all. I took the glass off to see what might be the problem and noticed one of the plastic opening mechanisms was broken. I tried to buy a replacement part from my Dodge dealer but the part I need is not sold separetely. So I pick up a whole new/used assembly from a wrecker. Now comes the fun part. I have heard how much a pain in the butt the headliner is to remove but can I get away with just loosing it up and letting it hang down to get at the sunroof assembly and has anyone have to do this. I seem to have the Bermuda Triangle of truck options. Megacab, sunroof, DVD system. All the info I find only has two out of the three I have. any and all help is greatly appreciated. BTW the sunroof is currently in the vented position because the track system is out of alignment so rain is coming in. So time is a little factor.
I just went through this exact thing. Mine would only vent. I took the whole headliner down and it's really not that bad. What I liked is that the side trim panels where the seatbelts mount at the top come off without taking the lower part off. I dont think I would let the front hang down. The headliner is so big in the megacab that it would probably bend and crease the fabric permanently. Just take it all down. It's really not that bad.
I layed the front seats all the way back and took the headrests off so the liner would lay low.
My back window was leaking as well and I went ahead and took it out so I could fix it......so I slid the headliner out the back window opening to make it easier. You could probably take the sunroof out no problem with the headliner just laying on top of the seats. It would make it a lot easier if the sunroof glass is already out of the top. The majority of the weight is in the glass and you want it as light as possible if you're working around the headliner.
My problem was just as yours. I needed the piece that they don't sell separately. They sell the upper track piece but not the lower. I fixed mine with a drill and a screw. One of the little ears that stick out of the driver side plastic guide piece broke off. I drilled a hole in that spot and installed a screw and it fixed it.....probably better than new.
I also suggest checking your drain tubes from the sunroof. Take them off the sunroof and blow through each of them to make sure they are clear and don't have any holes. My driver side rear tube had at least 3 pinholes in it. I got a new one at the dealer for $30.
Vehicles that have the same sunroof according to dodge dealer:
all trucks 05-12
grand cherokee 05-10
charger 05-10
challenger 08-12
300 05-10
commander 07-10

Thanks for the info but I had already taken it into a glass repair shop by the time you posted it. They had it done in 4 hours. Couldn't really beat that. And they detailed my truck afterwards.
