Smarty Jr Question
Hello I am very new to this so please take it easy on me .
I have a smarty tuner and installed it on my 2009 dodge ram 3500 .
I have had the truck for about six months now and all have been fine, I should also add I purchased the truck in Alberta ,Calgary and drove it home to B.C ,Vancouver . The truck came with warrantee and extended warrantee as well .
As I said all have been good until lately the truck started to blow out puffs of black smoke and then after several days the regeneration display in over head console and engine light came on .
So regeneration needed in mins from 80 to 90 to 100% .
I had done some reading and decided to take the truck for a run to allow for regeneration. On my drive of over a half hour I passed a Chrysler dealer and went in to find out how I could get the truck to regenerate .
They told me that they had time and could check it over so I had them look at it and found the EGR valve was faulty and also the DPF was plugged full .
My question is is this a result of me running the smarty with out doing the deletes , do you have to on a stock truck remove the EGR valve and DPF deletes before you run the smarty?

Hopefully one of your warranty's will cover the costs. Most likely it was the faulty(read stuck open) egr valve that caused your problem, as it did with mine when I plugged/melted my dpf.
Read this; http://dodgeownerforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=13534.0
It explains a lot regarding the exhaust emission equipment problems.
It also talks about tuners, though I doubt one would cause problems unless you were WAY up on hp and fuel.

There are delete tunes and non-delete (epa compliant) tunes available.
Delete tunes will have a "M" in the file name, such as DRM01E.
Epa compliant tunes will have a "S" in the file name, such as DRS01L
Yes, you can run the epa compliant tune on tow (sw-2?) On a stock truck with all the emissions equipment in place. Just keep an eye on regen cycles. Usually more power = more soot = more regens, but the Smarty tunes do run cleaner so it should be a push.
If you have a SmartyJr that is delete capable, you can change your mind later and do deletes and a delete tune.
If you have a epa compliant SmartyJr (there will be a "US" in the serial #), it will only load the epa compliant tunes and cannot be used for deletes.

Thanks for the responce ,I am away on holiday on the coast of oregon and towing my trailer so good to know the sw-2 (towing setting is ok) .
I had the smarty installed before all went bad but removed the tune before i went in for service and the warrantee service .
All seems to be running great now , so i thought i would bump it up for towing , in and out of wifi coverage so will check in in a while , again thank-you to those who responded to my problem .....Brett

Do you know what tune you're running? If not just plug in the smarty and it will show the tune name. Post it here so we can see if its a delete tune or epa compliant one.
As said above, if you run a delete tune on a stock truck you will fill the dpf.
You will need an epa compliant tune for your truck.
Like I said above, more power = soot so if it filled while towing on sw-2, you may need to drop it to 1 or return it to stock to keep it from filling again.
Anyways, post your tune and we'll go from there.

So I have determined that , from the info above D:RMO1E .
I have to do the deletes first .
My serial number on the back of the jr is. SJ67P13015102,
So can I download the EPA tunes for my truck with this smarty jr?.
As this is what I would like to do because I have warrantee coverage still on the truck?

Yep, delete tuner and tune. No wonder the dpf filled up.
Yes, you can download the epa tune and run it until you delete. Your tuner will run either type of program.
You do run the risk of voiding your warranty with any tuner though as it does leave a footprint in your ecm showing it was there. Kind of a moot issue now as you've already had a tune loaded so I'd go for it.

Thank you for your help, and yes I wondered about detection of the tuner before I took it in and was told any tuner can be found if the person who is looking for it knows what to look for.
So I don't want to go through this again . Brett
PS just came back from the Humbold redwoods in the north of California

Ok, time for a long response.
Your local shop is (kind of) correct and yes they almost sold you a new tuner! They may be smarty friendly, but not consumer friendly.
Yes mads has new US epa compliant ONLY tuners and tunes now and the ME delete tunes are no longer downloadable from their site. But they left out a bunch...
The tuner you have is delete capable. AND can load non-USA epa compatible tunes also.
ALL the tunes are still available and new ones are being written as needed. You just can't get the ME tunes from the mads website. You just need to know who to ask and pm them your email addy to have access to them. (hint-hint)
Mads has two different tunes available on their site, US epa compliant tunes for the new US-epa compliant tuners and NON-US epa compliant tunes for the older tuners such as yours.
The NON-US epa compliant tune is what you want to load on your tuner/truck until you want to do your deletes. Then you can later load the ME file and delete.
Your tuner is fully functional and the tunes are ALL downloadable for it.
As a matter of fact, its the same one I have.
You might consider joining the smarty resource forum. Lots of great info there and in the faq section.
