Running cold after smarty programs

Hey guys,

I have been waiting for my exhaust system to show up before doing deletes. While I have been waiting I decided to try out my smarty which already came. Set the programs to econo, and adjusted the tires size. The throttle response is great and knowing what speed I am traveling set my mind at ease. First thing I noticed after doing the programming was the truck ran noticeable colder and took longer to get to this new colder temperature. My immediate conclusion was because the EGR is turned off, and the guys over on cumminsforum cemented my conclusion. The last couple of days I have been able to put of a few more miles than my usual trip to work and back home. The engine was having issue getting off the 60C(140F) mark unless I romped on it. (obviously I am not towing anything or working the engine like I should be) The CEL came on 3 or 4 times in the last couple days, tossing code P0128 Thermostat rationality. It got me wondering if I had a stuck open thermostat, so I started playing with the programming again. First tried it on the standard SW0 setting, to see if that would change anything----no change. Programmed it back to stock, and with in minutes I had the engine up to operating temp (90-95C)(194-203F).

This got me concerned about doing full deletes and running the ME programming. Am I going to have the same cold running issue when I do the full deletes? Or are the ME and S programs different?
Is this just an issue I am going to have to deal with? Only running a small chunk of card board in the rad right now cause Is been warming up. Tonight was only down to -5c (25F)....should I block the whole rad off?
what about the non egr 5.9's do they have this issue of warming up when not being worked?

If you got a tips for me I would appreciate it. Thanks

I use the Smarty Sr, and did have the "normal" softwate in before doing my deletes. My temps ran the same as stock with the S-67 set on SW #3 before deletes, and the Catcher #3 after deletes. Thats very strange. Granted, it's probably alot warmer down here, even when it's cold :-)

thanks for the reply.

I blocked off more of the rad with a larger piece of cardboard, and reflashed the emc with smarty econo tune. Outside temps are still a -5c range, and coolant temp is running in the 95c/98c ranger in no time.

I'll just have to keep an eye on gauge as the season changes as outside temperatures start to rise.

Funny I never had noticed any change in the temp between the stock, S or ME software..

Hey, a fellow saskatoonian!!! My truck takes a bit longer to warm up as well since the deletes. Before the deletes, my intake temps were 160 to 205 degrees, now they run about 60 degrees F above ambient air temp.

Are you running the engine brake the whole time? Running it will keep the engine nice and toasty warm. I also have the under hood winterfront from dodge with the adjustable flaps, and it made a HUGE difference.

I have not deleted the EGR cooler, but did delete the EGR valve. I have found that my engine water temps are the same before I deleted the exhaust and EGR valve.
My son help another guy with a 6.7L engine and they deleted the cooler when doing the all of the other deletes. He reported that his truck is running colder then normal in the winter. I think the cooler adds some extra heat to the cooling system and if the added source is removed it will take longer to warm up and will not be as warm in the winter.
A winter front is definitely required with the cooler deleted in my opinion.

Hey dude,

I would love to eventually get the under hood winter front with adjustable flaps. I have seen a photo of it at the dealer but haven't got pricing yet. May I ask what you paid it?

Yes I always run with the brake on. Now that I blocked enough of the rad off it warms up nicely, with manual high idle and the brake on. This morning was a little scary for running around with the brake on! Roads were slick. Didn't realize how slick it really was til the brake activated and put the truck sideways LOL

With the engine temp back up where I like it, I am excited to do the deletes again. My exhaust just showed up yesterday! Can't wait to get started Saturday morning.

I think I paid about $130 at Dodge city. Yea she is REALLY slick out there, I was spinning all 4 tires on our Honda CRV at 50 mph on the highway. It HAS to be slippery if that gutless wonder will spin the tires.

Here is a reasonably priced winter front.
