High output altenator?
High output altenator?
Does Dodge make a high output altenator for the 6.7L engine?
I plan on doing the Group 31 mod posted by Streetsmoker a while ago because I'm adding a large air compressor for the train horns going on my truck, and my concern about the amp draw from the compressor its going to be a bit much (pulls 200 amps) and I don't want to overload the stock unit.
Thanks
Kris

Hadnt seen one but Im sure there is an aftermarket somewhere. I would take a gander at a dual setup too if you have any audio upgrades and such.

HO Alternator
I've seen ads from PA Performance for up to 200A. I haven't heard anything about their reliability.

Dodge has a 220amp alternator. It is the same offered on the 4500/5500 with the ambulance prep package.
Part number is 4801313AC, price is around $300US
The only issue is whether or not the pulley comes installed or not. It is a tricky dual splined piece. One spline in the pulley and a smaller internal spline in the shaft.
It looks like this:

And requires a special tool like what is in this toolkit, on the far right:

I am looking to do this modification to my truck also, so I am collecting info about it.
Scott.

A dual setup is more of a do it yourself type deal. I dont know if there are any kits on the market.
I do know there is aftermarket units that put out some pretty strong amps.

I am looking at putting bigger batteries in the bed and will tackle that asap.
Does anyone have any wiring done with a project like this?
sorry bout the slight hijack...good info on this thread.
Scotty
If you have twice as much money, you can buy a 260amp alternator from DC Power Engineering.
Huge price increase for another 40amps. But I bet the DC power engineering amp has higher current at idle.

I posted this on another forum, and though that some people here would like the same info.
I recently lucked out and found a Denso 220A alternator for a Ram 5500 on eBay. This is the optional alternator, or bundled with the ambulance package.
I bought it for $160, but with most places charging a core charge of $40, I guess you could say I got it for $120. It was *NEW*, not a scratch.
The Denso part number is 421000-7001
The Dodge part number is 4801313AC
Denso confirmed that it was indeed a 220A alternator. They sent me the information below:

In case the information is not readable it says:
Rated output - 12V, 220A
2 Point Characteristics - 95A min @ 1600rpm, 193A min @ 2500rpm
Output volts -15.0V
Field current - 8.0A
So with a ratio of ~3.3 (crank pulley (7.872") to alternator pulley(2.360"))
@700rpm engine idle - Alternator rpm = 2310
@1100rpm high idle start - Alternator rpm = 3630
@1500rpm high idle top speed - Alternator rpm = 4950
So this shows that at engine idle the alternator is capable of outputting almost 190A. And if you kick the high idle on, you have full current.
Now for some pictures:
Alternator full shot:

De-coupler pulley:

Alternator rear:

Alternator connections:

Model numbers:

Installed with upgraded wire:

Original 136A Alternator:

136A alternator rear:

So far it is working well. The volt gauge hardly drops now when the grid heater comes on, even with lights and fan on.
Hope this can help anyone who is looking to upgrade.
