68RFE Junk? Who Has Actually Had Problems
#31
225798 kms on mine so far and has been great. Between pulling a 12k 5er or a 16k lq 4 horse trailer no problems. Running full delete kit, 4" exhaust turbo back and H&S Mini Max set on tow when pulling and street empty.

tranny
My68 tranny has been giving me troubles for the last 25000 miles. I shows the 868 code "low line pressure" I have changed the valve body/ solenoid pack, changed the fluid every 30 k. Now here's how it acts
1. on start up it it acts like its very low on fluid, its not. requires to be put in drive and then to reverse and back to drive and all is ok than, and for the most part the rest of the day.
2. Now here's the strangest part, twice when putting it in drive the tranny locked up in gear just like a standard and wheels started to spin lightly until I hit the brakes hard enough to stall the truck.
When driving down the road it acts fine and I get lock up in 5th and 6th gears, thats what my EDGE monitor indicates anyway. I'm going to tear it down and rebuild it completely with the help of a professional tranny guy, don't know what else to do.

I had an '07, completely bone stock. Just 3000kms over the warranty, the oil pump input shaft broke, which destroyed the tranny. There were no parts or trannies around at the time. I was lucky to find a salvage unit for a replacement.
There was no help from DC at the time.
now I have a G56.

I have an 08 2500 w/ a 68RFE with 280k kms on it. Been chipped at various levels since shortly after new, and while it isnt perfect by a long shot (this is the first automatic vehicle I have owned in 12 years of owning vehicles, so I like the control I have when I get to pick the gear), it has held together remarkably well. This truck has spent its life as a work truck in northern BC, which means crap roads, lots of hills, and lots of sticky mud, big tires, and just abuse in general. While its shift logic is far from perfect (or complete crap, more accurately), the longevity of this particular example is more than I expected.

I have 95k on mine and run 35" tires. The only issue I have had is some hard shifts when towing over 10k lbs. it usually happens going up steep passes and downshifting sometimes holds too long when going down steeper grades then hitting flat areas.
I have not had a single issue that required service in all my mileage.

On another forum this questions has been asked also. One of the responders who have discussed this with the Ram engineering team at the CMEP rally this year stated the following. The 68RFE is a good transmission and has been updated for the additional horsepower, the AISIN just doesn’t break. An I quote “Why spend $8k for an engine that is too good for a mere pickup without getting a tranny that is also too good. The 3500s at least aren't mere pickups anymore.” End of quote.

My 2007.5 has run just fine, H&S at 30 hp setting. E brake on all the time and shifting is done with the little button on the shift lever. All shifts at 2300 RPM. Just cannot get the old highway rig shift points out of my head.

I have 117k miles on my 2007 with my truck camper loaded I weigh in about 12k lbs. Pulling steeper hills if the truck gets in 3rd gear the TC won't lock in and the tranny starts slipping. Temps sky rocket from 190 to 230f and I pull over put it in N til it cools down. It has been maintained properly. I have a Smarty but it is not turned up. I am thinking it needs a rebuild and a additional tranny cooler with a fan?

Ben are you saying the general public will pay 7 to 8 grand extra for the engine but not an additional 2 or 3 grand for the bullet-proof trans? I have a hard time believing that.
