It always amuses me when someone adds a lot of power to a truck and expect the auto trans--or clutch--to hold it all. trans are built to hold 'x' power. even an aftermarket trans needs to be set up for a given power level.

Some Duramax guys run the 47 or 48 re trand for drag racing.

Had the 48 in my 2500 04. In 2008, started slipping in 1st. Probably some my fault by not changing fluid till 80 K miles. But, I don't want to take full blame. Never has a transmission given me any issues of all I have owned my life. Traded 2500 in for a 2009 3500 DRW. Only 15K miles and running good. Will change trans fluid every 30K now. Hope this helps. Also, bought the 7 year 100K warranty this time.

mods are in my signature. I did the deletes at about 10,000 miles. Just hit 27,000 miles and not a single problem with the tranny (knock on wood)

I don't think he told you that, as one of his dealers we have some pretty candid conversations and there are a lot of things that the aftermarket has to step up and do before you will get something as good as a built 47/48.

With all of the electronics and emissions stuff I doubt it. The 12 valve will probably always be the standard by which all others are judged in the reliability catagory. Ask anyone who has owned both and is not to proud to admit the truth.

I have 87,000 miles on my 68rfe, with not one problem. I just had my fluids flushed and changed 1,000 miles ago, and it was normal. I was very pleased to see this. I drive the truck everyday on sw8, and have the 21me tune with the smarty. I tow on sw2. Loads range from 10,000 to 25,000 on the trailer at different times of the month, and more consistant during peak farming months. I can not wait to see how long the tranny will live.

Oh and if some of you do not know me, or remember, I left this site a few years back because I bought a 04 crew cab Duramax dually with allison. It lasted 86,328 miles before being toasted. I then went with a suncoast stage 5 and it was ok, but had many glitches to work out over a long period of time.

I treat my 68rfe the same as I did the Allsion I am not easy on them at all, but I do not try and destroy them either.

Uhhh, I have owned both and I am looking at whats current and what is being overcome with regards to the emissions and electronics. The advances both from the factory and the aftermarket are happening faster then any of the 12 valve P-7100 advances happened.
If it was a choice of mechanical and electronic, I would choose the P-7100. I can run higher power cleaner for the tree huggers now then I did with the 12 valves. JMHO from the 26 trucks I have beat up and ran for in excess of 200K each and some higher.
Thats not to say I would not want a BLACK smoke billowing nasty 12 valve for some fun!

With regards to the trans...I recall having issues with 75 added HP on a 12 valve auto. And that was from a much lower HP truck then whats available now.
This 6.7 is at or near 400HP with the tuning I have and its holding better. 142K miles and climbing.

Not personally, but whoever answers the phone at his shop told me that they have a 68re available that will hold 500+ hp.

I didnt say it will be better than the 48, I just said that once the built versions are perfected, however long that may be, that it will be just as good.

The only problem I know is from Dodge owners who complain on the harsh down shift with towing.

I have the 2007.5 6.7 with the 6sp 68RFE tranny and tow across the country about 11k to the tune of 6k miles per yr since Nov 2008 and have had no problems but do not use an after market programmer to boost hp and torque. I have only 70k miles on my Ram 2500, 4x4, quad cab rb, hd. I tow in cooler months,1st of Nov and end April beginning of May so heat is not an issue so far.
