6.7 Intercooler Identification

Ok,

It has been raised as to when the 6.7 got the smaller intercooler. I personally am not sure, so I figured we could have a thread with pics and try to narrow it down.

Here is mine, build date of July 2007.

Ignore the bugs.

I added in a pic that shows the measurement of the cooler and the part number.

My truck has a build date of April, 2009. Had the small intercooler, but have since swapped to a 5.9L intercooler.

Good information Ahab, thanks for showing. Are the 5.9 and early 6.7 IC the same?

I have a friend with an '08 and his fat intercooler does look the same as my swapped in 5.9L intercooler. Different part number though, if I remember correctly.
I did not have any gauges when I had the skinny cooler, so I can't comment on lower EGT's, but they must be lower. As far as seat of the pants - can't really tell much, maybe a little, or I just want to believe?

So, why did they swap to the smaller cooler? You would think that after shoving all the egr crap into the intake and heating it up like that, that you would want a bigger cooler to try and keep things under control.

I think it would be quite the opposite. Smaller cooler, warmer intake temps. Warmer intake temps, hotter EGTs.

Hotter EGT's......

Less active regen.

The larger intercooler is the same part # for 2006 through 2009 - Part # 5170704AJ

The smaller intercooler is part # 55057092AA and it is listed in the 2008 through 2010 catalogs. (for 2010 only for cab & chassis & 4500/5500 - not the new body style)

I just checked mine and it is the larger one - the tag # on top is 55056817AC but it is not a good part #.

Yup..the higher intake temps help with the NOX control IIRC.. Great, another part to replace...

Blake, you guys have some big bugs down there. At first I thought that was a bird stuck on the a/c condensor.
