Is it worth it to upgrade cam?
Engine will be going back together shortly. Should I look into getting a new cam? Is there an upgrade for more power without killing fuel economy too bad?
I tried a search, but there are soooo many posts with the word cam in them.
Thanks, Dan

I think there is a lot to gain with a cam. You may not see it in peak hp over a stock cam in an over lay of a dyno graph. But if you see in real time run between the two is a no brainer on which one you want in your truck. When I get enough coin a hamilton is going in mine.

I would be happy with a little over 500 hp. So with that in mind, should I not worry about the cam and spend the money elswhere?
Thanks, and I appreciate all input and opinions.

Advocate of getting the ban button used on him...
As long as the engine is apart and you do want more HP, now is the time to upgrade cam and springs. Best bet is to call places like Hamilton or others and tell them what your goals are and they will help you choose the right one for you.

^^^ I agree with the above. Labor is the expensive part of the cam when the engine is in the truck. Do it now.
There is some truth to what what said above about 04.5 and up being more beneficial due to the in cylinder egr effect. However, good gains are still to be had. If you are looking at 500, a towing cam might be your best bet. Lets you breath, gives a little better mpg, you won't have to replace springs unless you want to (or you want to rev over 3400 rpm and see big boost) and you'll see better street characteristics. Lots of good cams out there right now. When you are checking them out, give Peak Performance a call too. The folks there designed some of the first performance diesel cams and their towing cam is still tops.
