Why do our 3rd gens SURGE when cold?

What causes our 3rd gens to SURGE when cold? Is it cold air intake? Is it running on 3 cylinders? Is it because we have modules or programmers that effect stock timing/fueling? My truck is a 2004.5 . i live in canada and right now its -49 celcius where I live. Why does it surge? People with fords and duramaxes laugh because it sounds like **** when idling? Sometimes truck actually shakes? Sounds like it has HP cam in engine.

Duhno.... my 03 does not do this other than idling up but thats normal, why are you hanging out with Ford,Duramax guys?! ha ha.

is it right after you start it? our trucks cycle the grid heater for a couple minutes and they have glow plugs.

Being -50°, it's probably just your engine trying to breathe through all the icicles hanging off your intake.

Including me!

Personally, I've been enjoying myself in this 60-65° weather for the past couple days. At least I don't have to worry about icicles hanging off my intake.

Back to the original topic, I realy have no idea why your truck is surging. Sounds like you have had some problems since the Edge install.

It's not that. When the grid heater is cycling it "loads" the engine (you can actually hear the sound of the engine change) but when it surges it's almost "lopey" I would say. At least that's what it sounds like on my truck. And I'm assuming it's from the EZ, but I don't want to pull it off to find out

when its warm it doesnt do it. Its not the grid heater either. thats different. The grid heater is the first few minutes and lights dim. This is a faster surge/pulse.Kinda like it is cammed or wants to die. fuel filter is brand new. I use good fuel. and it ALWAYS goes away after I drive it. Just before I start driving it on a cold day.

My old 04 555 engine and my 06 Both do what your describing when it is extermely cold, I consider it normal. I have also heard other diesel engines do the same.
Why I don't know mabey it is easier for a V8 to maintaine a idle with the 2 extra pistons wasting fuel

I have always associated surging with a lean mixture. Maybe at the cold temps you are running during cold starts your intake air charge is just very dense. Dense enough to be more than the trucks ability to fuel properly at idle. Also all the engine parts are so cold they are not helping to expand the air much. Maybe you need to install a double grid heater. I would think it is normal at your temps. Anyone else have an idea?
