I have the aftermarket wheel/rim "bug".......I need to start looking at some 17X8 or 17X9 wheels.

My stock 17X8s are looking pretty bad and I want to start looking at which wheel will cause the least amount of issues. By issues I mean problems like rubbing either the fender flares or control arms. Yes, my stock wheels cause the larger 315s to rub ever-so slightly on the control arms.

Obviously, most aftermarket wheels have less backspacing, so the tire/wheel combo will be pushed farther out, so the control arm rubbing issue should disappear, but what about rubbing on the backside of the fenders and fender flare area.

First off, what are the specs on my stock rims, other than being 17X8 and having the 8-6.5 bolt pattern.......backspacing, etc.

Secondly, which size is better for 315s and why:
-17" x 8"
-17" x 9"

I have a brand new set of BFG AT KO 315-70R17 tires, that I will be using.

If I crank the tires to one side, or the the other, and then measure the distance between the tire and the fender and fender flare area, will this give me an idea on what backspacing and wheel width I should look for?

I'm running my stock chrome clad's with the BFG AT KO's in 315/70/17 and think it looks perfect. I have no rubbing issues at full turn but do have a 2" leveling kit.

O6Mega, he wants to go with an aftermarket rim. He already has BFG 315's on the stockers.

D45, if you want to go simple, you can't beat the Eagle Alloys or Pro Comp rims. I ran Eagle Alloys 058 with my 35's for a while with no rubbing issues. A buddy of mine runs Pro Comp 17x9's with 37's and no rubbing, course he is sitting on a 4.5" Skyjacker.

 

I believe the backspacing on our stockers is 4.75" IIRC.

 

Actually the stock backspacing is about 6.25"; the wheels with 5" or less backspacing is what causes the rubbing on these trucks.

I've always liked the chrome H2's or the XD series wheels. You can get them in a 5.7" backspacing which works good for these trucks. Not too far out, but not too far in.

As far as rin size, either width wheel will work but the 9" wide wheel is a little better suited for a 315 in my opinion.

 

Check out Centerline Wheels, They are a little pricey, but are forged, have a heavy load capacity, and they offer a 17x8.5 with a 6" backspace. Most are offered in Polished alum or chrome.

 

American Racing has a line of wheels out that have as much as 5 3/8" backspacing, still not as much as factory but closer than most brands.

I'm looking at some Centerline 20x9's with some LT35x13.50R20 Cooper Discoverer STT's......debating on the Grizzly or the Scout models.

What is the backspacing of the H2 wheels?

Does anyone know on the cost to powdercoat a set of 4?

 

Not sure on the cost to powdercoat, but the backspacing is 5 1/2".

 

Cost me $320 to have mine powder coated ($80 ea.). Like the above post stated. The H2 Wheels are 5.5" of backspacing and 8.5" wide. No rubbing on the upper control arms or fender wells w/ 35" tires. Stick out about an 1/2" more than the stocker wheels.

Also I wouldn't go any wider than 9" wheel. Start having problems any wider w/ just a level kit on.

 

OH...........so the H2 wheels are 17" x 8.5"!! I thought they were 17" x 8" and just had different backspacing.

The stockers are 17" x 8", so the additional 0.5" should also help with more even tire wear...........

 

Compared to stock, what are the H2 wheels rate for (poundage)?
