What Turbo for an Upgrade? Daily Driving Towing@500HP
What Turbo for an Upgrade? Daily Driving Towing@500HP
So here it is. My 70hp DDP injectors will be back in a couple days. Soon after that I'll be sending off my Juice to get the "HOT" upgrade. The BDPP will only see limited use in lev.1&2 only. Knowing all this my power should be up around 500hp, and a turbo upgrade is in order. I'm looking for the smallest amount of surge with the best available flow, cause this is my daily driver, and I often tow up to 8,000# over all types of terrain. Keep in mind, I won't have the boxes turned up "ALL" the time. Of course, I accept that the Phat Shaft series that are direct competion for the HTT's are pretty equal in terms of performance so I left them out, but feel free to post your choices if not in the poll.
So I've compiled the following poll too see what people recomend. Please read this before voting to limit gut reactions.

I have a friend that runs the slepuller 66 with a 12 cm housing. He also tows with his combo. Usually with a bully dog pp and the tst on level 3 or 4 and says the egts stay in check nicely and spool up is nice. I am sure top end is restricted slightly with the 12cm housing, but his main concern was everyday drivability.
Well, I've called a few places, and ever vendor says theirs is the best, so there's no way to know who to believe. I was on HTT's web site and they say the HTB-62 series is good to 525hp. The BD Super B is supposedly rated at only 425hp but most people seem to think it's underrrated. And The Phat Shaft turbos along with the ATS and new Edge seem to be over priced I hope a good many peole respond so I can make an informed decission.

if you have an adjustable box like the TST or Edge you will find out that even if you can tow at 500hp and keep EGTs in check you more than likely wont tow at that, and you will turn down the box to have a comfortable tow and not destroy your trailer.
P.S. Dont get me wrong I am not saying you'll turn it way down

Yea Syndicate it's all your fault. Ever since you posted the thread about your DDP injectors I started getting back into bombing this thing. I hate you
And here I thought I was done. After this though, I'll come to a wall and promise my self not to go past it
But seriously, I figured that there were more than a few people on here who had lingering questions on this very subject, so I thought I would provide a much needed service. So lets hope this thread lasts a while and inform us all.

The thought of towing with 500hp is the bomb. Must be a testosterone thing.
I don’t know how many people have actually tried to tow with 500hp to the rear wheels, but it is darn near impossible to do and actually use it all. I say "near impossible" because we all know there are yahoos here that do it anyway.
Not "near impossible" due to heat mind you, but what the heck can you do with all that acceleration when you have 8K behind you? Drag racing with your 5'ver in tow?
Even pulling a hill or passing someone from a 70mph cruise with 8K in tow, 500hp will accelerate you so fast that it will literally scare you if your using it all. The most I tow is a 6K camper that I rent when I need it (beats a year round payment for our 3 month summer
) and I don’t even turn the boxes up for that any more. Realistically, about 400hp and I can still get in the passing lane and blow by everyone else while climbing 6% grades just as fast as my nerves will allow me to accelerate with that weight behind me. Even at that level my go pedal almost never touches the floor.
I guess what I'm trying to say is realistically, most will never tow at 500hp even if they have and can support way more than that, not unless their setup just can’t be turned down. It sounds good, but just isn’t very feasible. Sure most will try it (you have to try it
), but it will leave you thinking how did I just do that and not rip the axles right out from under this thing. For probably 90% of your towing situations (other 10% for showing off
), a 62mm turbo will probably work out OK for you.
We do have a few members here, like JStieger, who has 100hp injectors and just downgraded from a 66 to a 62 and loves it. He does some decent towing. Maybe he will chime in.
I just wish the 66 and 64mm turbos had a better track record for not surging. More is always better, but you just never know what those will do on your rig. Once you buy it, all of the vendors will work with you if you have surging, but you still own it. They are not taking it back and the cost of changing it is on you. That sucks.
Then there are twins.
(had to throw that out there)

I have a B1-2-04 which is real close to the HTT62/14. It works extremely well for me. Good spool-up and while towing I can tow in level 2 or 3 in the Hot Juice, however I have on real steep grades had to lower the box to #1 and on one occasion turn the Juice off. This was 17,500# gross.
now if only I could get a 2' flame to shoot out the exhaust tip on the shift like the high strung turbo RX7 guys do.LOL I agree that 500HP is totaly not needed when towing. I drive very slow when towing in comparison to when Im empty so I dont need it. Everytime I get goin too fast someone tests out the trailer brakes by pullin out without noticing that large black thing doin 90 in their direction.
That is what I've tried to tell the vendors when i talked to them. They all try to sell you the biggest, most expensive turbo they have. Sure, this set-up I'll have will be "CAPABLE" of 500hp but how often will I use it. I say at most 5-10%. Even now, most of the driving I do is in pwr lev. 3/1 (Edge/BDPP) and even when towing I use that setting and the highest egts I've ever seen were 1180* pulling a 12mi. 6% grade going up to Flagstaff, AZ from PHX, AZ. In fact, since I've had the two boxes this truck has never even kicked out of overdrive while towing. If I was using it all the time I guess I would need a SPS66 or Sled puller, but what I need is something for the 90-95% of the driving I normally do.
It seems the industry is geered toward the thought of "you are always going to get more power later so pay for it now". I got the same type of attitude from shops when I was building my Jeep Cherokee for rock crawling. Guess what, it's still sitting on the 6'' lift and 33'' tires that were originally planned for it 4years ago and I don't see it getting any bigger, cause I'm able to show restraint when I come to an obstacle I can't surmount. I don't have to come back and ''CONQUER'' IT with something bigger and badder.
It's the same with this truck I know I'll reach a happy medium after this next step, and will stop. Cause the "NEXT LEVEL'' will require an amount of money I'm not willing to spend. It won't matter if I come accross someone with more hp/tq #'s than me or meet a car at a stoplight that blows my doors off, I'll be able to chalk that up to "Some Guys Just Need to Out Do the Next One".

I have a PS 64/14 and it has never surged, starts to spool @ about 1300rpm and is all the way spooled by about 1800-1900rpm. This thing is so streetable that I am trying to talk myself out of ordering a SPS 66 just to see how streetable it is since the 64 behaves this well. My egt's do heat up but I have no idea on how much hp I am pushing with this 215 pump that II tuned.
