What is "abuse" to the tranny?

May sound like a dumb question, but reading posts on how long trannies last with big HP, I see statements like "as long as your not being a bone head", and as long as you don't abuse them, and the such. BUT.............

If your running 600-800HP, aren't you going to want romp on it, hard launches, 1/8 miles races or do some boosted launches? (I do) So does that constitute "abuse"

If not, what is abuse? Thanks again.

Yes, that is abuse. Talking stock tranny, it is only good for stock power. Any other power added is actually abuse to the tranny. It may be gentle, but a stock tranny doesn't really like the extra power, especially if you are doing boosted launches, burnouts, etc... Even a $7000 tranny... boosted launches and such is abuse. It will hold longer and better than a stock of course, but everything has its limits.

If you modify the engine for more power you need to build the trans to handle it. If you have 600-700 hp power and leave the trans stock thats "abuse". If you overheat the fluid or run it low on fluid thats abuse. These trans are pretty tough, the torque converter is the weak link in my opinion. Slip the converter clutch, get the fluid hot and contaminated with T/C clucth debris and its all downhill from there. Put a mild shift kit (trans-go is a good one) install a trans temp gauge and stay on top of the band and filter maintanance and you will be good for mild performance upgrades.
