Warning To Much Water!!!
Warning To Much Water!!!
Hey guys,
It seems I can't catch a break. I just got the truck back together and all was great! The trans is shifting great and new clutch is holding well. Now for the bad news. I have a Whistler type intake and it sets right behind the opening on the right side of the radiator. Well last night on the way home I ran into a big time rain storm. I mean a real gully washer. Well we were moving along slow but the combination of spray off the cars and trucks ahead of me and the rain coming down loaded my intake. There was no indication that I was filling my intercooler with water but when the rain started to let up and speeds started to increase I pulled a bunch of water into my engine. Next thing ya know I was setting along the New York State Thruway waiting for a wrecker. I got the head off today and all looked good so tomorrow I'll pull the pan to see what I did this time...So let this be a warning to every one with an aftermarket intake I know that opening next to the radiator looks like the perfect spot to pull nice cool air from but it's also a good place to pull some nice cool water...

I use a power core from volant and have had no problems with this, I live in Florida, trop stroms, afternoon type monsoon down poors, etc. during the summer months. The power core is supposed to be none effected by water, maybe you could look into that??
Your dilema with water is why I did not go with a *****'s whistler intake. I made my own to protect from the elements and the engine heat. Hopefully my attached photo uploads. Hope you do not have major issues.
Dang it - I am not computer savy. Anyway the intake is mentioned in my signature and it is protected as mentioned before. I would suggest covering your filter element with at least an Outerwears cover, fabricate a shield, or reinstall the factory shield.
I use a green filter from my quad intake. I use PJ1 foam/fabric filter cleaner & PJ1 fabric oil, like at the dirt bike shop. The oil for the dirtbikes works great for water prevention, and its easy to apply, however it is easy to overapply, so be careful.

I thought of trying it but it is so tacky I thought it may cause some kind of filter restriction. I know it takes gas to wash it off my hands.
Topper..... sorry to hear about the bad luck. Did the engine lock up on you? If so, while you have the head off rotate the engine and make sure all 6 pistons have the same deck height. Thats a good way to check for a bent rod.
He guys,
I don't know if a different filter would have helped or not. I think if any filter is submerged in water - water can pass through it. Basically Push a filter into a bucket of water and if water goes through it you can have the same trouble that I'm having . All I'm saying is think about filter placement. I know a simple piece of tin would have saved me a bunch of money and time.
I'll keep ya posted on what happened to the engine.
