Try this

Get the AFE and take out your silencer ring. Plenty of noise

not to start a war but...

I believe I read a test showing that the K&N did not filter as well as the pro-guard 7 from AFE. Not trying to start a war but you may want to look into this. I had an AFE in my 03. I picked up a 93 and it has an ASA intake with a K&N on the end. I'm replacing the K&N next week.

Will an aftermarket airbox still let out plenty of noticeable whistle sound, especially from the outside, with the stock muffler and cat still in place?

yep

Yeah ..you will probably hear more since you won't have the loud exhaust. Go with the AFE you won't be dissapointed at all...

Thanks, i wasn't sure if the muffler and cat would quiet out the whistle totally just like it does with the exhaust sound.

I can't compair it with the others listed here, as I have not heard any of them first hand. But I do have a Scotty 5, and I do love the noise it makes. It sounds so much better than stock.

AFE Stage II

Just got the AFE Stage II from Power By Poole and I could not be happier with the sound and performance. I also removed the silencer ring, and man you can hear that turbo sing. It sounds like a real diesel now. I had my dad drive the truck so I could hear it from the outside, and from a half mile away, I could hear that turbo whistling away. Great fit and finish as well.

when i cleaned my k&n i could tell it was filtering pretty good. i spent a couple of hours rinsing out all the dirt. after a while i made the famous "its not as good as new but alot better then it was " decison.

How about the ones with the stock muffler and cat, how's that turbo sound outside the truck?

My AFE make plenty of noise. The only problem is that my mpg went down after installing it, and im not sure if this relates but ever since the install my right foot feels much heavier.
