Walbro upgrade

I just got a walbro 392, and when I was ordering it, I was asked if I had an intank pump, which I replied no to. Now, reading another thread, I saw that later 04's have an in tank pump. Does my truck have an internal or external pump, or does it really matter?

Any good suggestions on pump install would help, too. I have some good instructions that Glacier diesel provided, I'm just looking for any trouble that anyone has had installing this.

Thanks in advance...

My 04.5 has the filter mounted pump. It's easy to tell.Look @ your fuel filter. If there's a black, cylinder about 4" long with a pair of wires going to it,on the rear of the filter. You have the filter mounted pump.If there's just a hose,it's in the tank.

my 05 had the intake pump and it does make a difference cause if you have the intank pump then you need the draw straw for the tank and you would need to drop the tank and intall that. it really isn't that hard to drop the tank and install the draw straw i have done two of them now. PM me if you have any questions madhat

The 03-04.5 trucks have it mounted on the filter housing unless they have been back to the dealer for a replacement. In that case, the dealer will automatically replace it with an in-tank unit.

05 on up trucks already have the in-tank pump.

The in-tank pumps seem to be holding up well. I can hardly remember reading on here about any failures. The filter housing mounted ones seem to fail quite often.

And, if you are heavily bombing your truck you probably need to upgrade to an aftermarket pump anyway. I know I can pull my stocker lp pressure down to zero with Smarty on Level 9. Upgrades will be coming soon.
