I agree! The worst two things that have happened to these trucks as far as reliability goes is 1 The EPA 2 They are so overpowered and easy to modify that any "joe" with credit can buy one and make killer power without any understanding of the ramifications. I was reading a post the other day about a truck in the 500hp range bragging about taching the cummins up to 3000 rpm putting the trans in 4th and side stepping the clutch to do a burnout.

You are not supposed to do that? No wonder my stock clutch didn’t last!!

JK, actually I generally never touch the skinny pedal until the clutch is fully released.

I just went with 5.10b, but I put the truck back to completely stock...Figure I’ll drive it around that way for a few weeks to keep from getting spoiled by the Jr.

I did notice this. With 5.08, it would bark the tires if I was going slowly through town and then mashed the skinny pedal hard. It might still do this but it sure feels like there is more TQ management down low.

Thanks,

You got it. When you plug it in you will see what version you have.

If you already have say SW 1 installed and want to change the TM of TQ settings do you have to reload the program? The reason I ask is that when I make the changes in the TM or TQ settings the screen on the Smarty Jr reads something like "writing memory please wait". Is it making the changes in just a couple of seconds or do you have to upload the changes by uploading the same tune (i.e. SW 1)?

Thanks for the help,

Yes you have to reload the program. What you are seeing is the smarty saving your settings to it's memory in preparation for loading to the truck. POD settings are the only the only ones that are adjustable on the fly.

Well I was afraid to update but did as 5.09 created a slight ruff running feel between 1700-2000 rpms and I wasn't able to go back to 5.08 for some reason. So I bit the bullet and loaded 5.10B and it's gone and truck is a lot snappier again just like 5.08 is. Oh timing rattle is less too. We'll see if my mpgs come back too.

Thanks very much for that review. I've been considering going to 5.10B but decided to wait and see how it works for others. Keep us up to date.

Can you update the smarty without taking the truck back to stock first?

I have updated my Smarty Jr. a few times. This time I am having problems. For some reason when I plug it into my computer, my computer does not find it? The Smarty Jr. goes through the start up but my computer does not find it. Could it be the cord? I tried something else and it found it right away Thanks for you help!

I have no data to back this up other than SOTP feeling but 5.10b feels smoother than 5.08 with slightly more TQ management down low. I seem to have noticed a decrease in cruising EGTs and I got +.5 MPG on the last tank compared to previous on 5.08. Was this a fluke......IDK. I'll see on the next tank.

are you sure?

ive been playing with the TQ setting and when I go from TQ4 to TQ2, there is definitely a change in acceleration and shifting in my 03 auto. this is after the "writing memory" message goes away and without reloading the SW again. and im pretty sure that when i reload the SW setting afterwards, it brings TQ and TM to default.
I have 5.10B if that says anything.
