Twins?

With my setup, what would I need to do to go to twins? Will twins hurt towing? How much more power will I get?

I'd contact Nathan from MPI or Shane from Wicked and they can set you up with all the necessary twin components:

S474 or S480 turbo
HTT exhaust manifold flipped upside down for twins config
5" downpipe
hot pipe
cold pipes
air filter
drain tubes for turbos
hardware

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things. It's not a very complicated install, but there are alot of parts to make it all work. I went with MPI for mine and everything went together flawlessly.

How is towing with the 64/65/13SS now? It would be pretty similar with a bigger primary, just a tad longer to start spool. The S474 is commonly used when people know they are going to use the truck for towing. The S480 is going to flow a bit more but won't be quite as quick to spool. Give one of those guys a call and let them know what you're planning on using the truck for and what goals you have, and they'll get you set up!

That setup should be good for around 650ish hp with the Flux 1.8 sticks you have now. How's your rail pressure? I'd think you'd need to upgrade your cp3 again, but I could be wrong.

Out of curiosity, why the desire to upgrade?

MORE POWER!!!! Really, I was just wondering in case I wanted to do it in the future. I'd like to know that most of my mods will support future upgrades. I'd like to be 600 to 650 HP. But, I have not even had the chance to take my truck to a dyno yet. So, I don't even know what I have now. I know it's not that much. I was just curious. I like the turbo I have now but it seems to take a while to spool up.

It takes awhile to spool up? Compared to the stocker? I've heard the 62/65/13 spools up quicker than stock, I'd be curious to know how much different it is compared to the 64 that you have. On a side note, you may want to check your wastegate to make sure it is closing all the way. On my 62/71/13SS, the arm that holds the pucks in the housing bent forward over time due to heat, so the pucks were never actually blocking off the flow. If it seems like the spool is slower than when you first got it, that may be something to look into.

If you want quicker spooling than what you have, maybe someone would be willing to trade their 62/65/13 for your 64/65/13...it's something to look into. I'd imagine that over an S474 would make a super quick spooling set of twins, and get you into the 600hp area. Nathan know ALOT about turbos, I'd give him a quick ring and see what he suggests.

Ya, I used to have one. I sold it when I moved to Utah about 7 years ago. I had lost my license (due to the bike) and there were WAY too many police around the area where I lived, and it was too tempting to keep the bike but not ride it. So, I sold it and used the money for a down payment on my first house out here. Best thing I ever did! I eventually got my license back, and now I've got a CRF450R that I turned into a motard...this thing is a blast to drive on the street!!!

Doesn't make any sense that you should have slow spool. My dad has that turbo on his 06 with stock injectors and it spools like stock. By the way. I think you already have 600hp, but you would LOVE the power of twins.

This is my current ride. I love this bike. Nothing like pulling it up at 70 MPH.

Ahh...the Repsol 1000RR was my dream bike, I wanted that thing since the minute it came out! Only thing is, I was getting in too much trouble with my streetbike. Bought the 450 thinking I'd just have fun on the dirt/sand, but then my friend hooked me up with street tires/rims, so now I'm hooked. I like the 450 cuz there's always a quick getaway...over a curb, up or down stairs, thru a field, etc...hehe.

Okay, back on topic...TWINS! If you have the money, it really is a no-brainer. It's the best of both worlds! I highly recommend it! I think cquestad had a 64/65/13 over an S480 and he dynoed like 760+ and was having a few issues. He should've been over 800hp. If you're looking for around 600-650hp, you could always sell your turbo, find a cheap '05 stock turbo, massage the wastegate passage, throw an S480 under it and you'd have a super quick spooling truck that makes GREAT power! Several people have gotten into the 12's in the 1/4 with that combo!

I've got a CRF450, but no street tires as of yet...working on it...but will probably get them for the planned KTM450! Nice bikes and agree with the exit strategy!

I like the idea of using my 62/65/13ss in a set of twins, but cant fault how it performs now, and never really need more...for me it would just be useful at the track...and i dont really go often enough to justify the $'s for twins and further cp3 mods....hoping some F1's will be enough for me to reach my end game of around 500-550hp and call it good.

I'm running the 62/65/13 SS over an S400 with all the goodies listed in my signature, but am having some technical difficulties right now getting it finished. I'm wondering if the Helix 2's are a bit large. IT smokes on the bottom like a pig and the EGT's are way high. Once I get the boost over 15 or so it's lightning fast spool, but getting to 15psi makes the sun disappear and the way the EGT's are I have to back off to like half throttle by the time I'm at 65MPH.

By the way sweet bikes, I'm running a KTM right now and looking for a new one I can convert to Motard myself. Curious why only one bark buster on the CRF450. Saw it on the Stoppie pic.

Hey Chris, who's twin setup did you use? Does it have the cheater wastegate in the top turbo where you screw the bolt in to close/open the wastegate? I've found that if you tighten it all the way in then back it up til you just barely get movement when you push on it with your hand (and I mean just barely), then back it up one full rotation, that's where my setup was working best.

OR...you could have one of the defective wastegate arms that managed to get by HTT. They've since corrected the problem and have a new arm/pucks, but you wouldn't know unless you pulled the cover off that top turbo. The arm was bending due to heat, pushing the pucks forward, so the pucks were actually hitting the housing instead of covering the holes to block off the flow. This happened over time, due to heat, so it wasn't something I noticed right away. When I changed my injectors from Flux 2's to DDP200's, I realized right away there was a problem with the wastegate. I was pretty much driving around trying to spool my S474 with no help from the secondary. I pulled the top turbo and took off the inspection plate and it was VERY obvious something was wrong! I live 10 minutes from HTT, so I brought it down to them and they replaced it and had it ready for me the next morning. I also had them swap out the 74mm wheel to an 80mm wheel in my primary.

After I re-installed the turbos, it was like driving a completely different truck! It kinda sounds like you're having the same problem. You have a smaller secondary than me, so your setup should be spooling SUPER quick! I'd try to adjust the cheater wastegate first and see if that fixes anything. If not, I'd pull the inspection cover off and see if the wastegate arm is functioning correctly. I'd check the obvious/easy stuff first, like check for boost leaks or cracks, etc.

Good luck!

Jared
