Turbo upgrade for a 04

Hello All

We have a strong running 04 3500 that will put down over 400 HP on a Dyno Jet dyno.

I am looking to up grade the turbo and the exhaust system. I have heard the turbo bark to many times to be happy.

Here are my main concerns tho. I DO NOT WANT TO LOOSE ANY OF MY DEPENDABLITY.
We use the truck to pull our 31 ft 5er camper and a 26 ft goose neck. We also find it fun to smoke the heck out of those fart can cars that come up to the lights making a bunch of noise.
My wife likes to race it on occacession.
I am curious to see what set up you folks that tow are running. The weight of the 5er is 11,000 max the goose neck is 14000 and then add the truck and we are talking roughly 19,000 and as much as 22,000.

Thanks in advance
See ya
Chris

I say a TAD B1 - or a HTT HTB2/Killer B - Sledpuller may be too much for big towing

I also say stay away from the Super B, due to cost (vs other better turbos)- Like wise on the DD ball bearing turbo until more good reports confirm its quality

Piers Towing Twins would do just fine, but you might have to add a small box for a little more fuel and high flow muffler to help with EGTs. Stock 400+hp rwhp is rather unusual to say the least. Heck, try the twins, but take it easy, cause when you hook the 31 ft 5er camper to that 500rwhp the 48re is gonna fry.

400+HP, 800+TQ????Stock????

there is more to meets the eye on this, wont give anything away but i have seen, both of these "stock" trucks make the numbers.and he has a very good "stock " tranny as well..as for turbos i like the advance diesel cat 4 ,no real greater lag than my stocker..also since i know you if you are interested in bolting it on and trying it il let you use the stock one that came of of my 05,it has a 62 mm wheel...just food for thought....jess

Being a little more factual would produce better answers , I still say the Piers Towing Twins.

What nonsense - stock truck and those numbers. Who are you trying to fool papasmurf? Save that 'it's stock' line for your duramax buddies, lol. Once you post about what you have, people will much better be able to appropriately match a turbo setup.

I must be blind, where does he say its 'stock'? I would venture to guess theres a bit of humor injected into his signature.

Papa, I have similar power with my 04 and for now I am running the stock turbo. I don't get the huffing you describe. I am currently running a Ramifier stacked with a BD downloader on the performance level. I may not be right at 400 but I know I am close...no dyno nearby to test. I did remove the stock intake hose to the turbo in exchange for a smooth bore flex hose.

As for exhausts, I have heard several that drone. This drone can be reduced with an Aeroturbine as far forward as possible.
Since I tow REAL heavy and for several hours at a time, I still got the drone. Therefore I put the Nelson 51" muffler on...it sounds real nice, the cab is no longer a drum beating on me at 2,000-2200 rpm and the egt towing are actually down another 50F towing. Otherwise the Aeroturbine was good not towing or any other rpm.

Some of the exhaust systems will have different sound because of the wall thickness.

Scotty

Actually his sig. says stock truck, so maybe the body is stock, and he meant to put that the drivetrain is upgraded and just forgot Just like my 72 El Camino is stock

Ok, I don't know him well but I do know him enough to know he has a TST box on it and maybe an edge also. I am sure he will post. I was at the dyno event when he made those numbers. I think by stock he is refering to his stock turbo. I don't think for a minute that he is trying to make you guys believe he has a "Stock" truck making those numbers.

just my .02

I would recommend a Killer B or B1-2-04. Either would keep you nice and cool at that power level, spool really well for towing, and both are tuff as nails.

AK didn't you shred a b1 pretty quickly? Maybe I'm missing the difference between a b1-2-04 and a regular b1.

Yep. Well.....what can I say. We are pretty sure that turbo had something wrong with it from the factory. Besides, the guy is only running 438hp. It would be an awesome turbo at that level.
