Turbo install tips
Good Afternoon, DTR...
I'm gettin a HTT single by the end of the week... (hopefully it ships by then...) (64/71/SS14 (16)...)
What are some good install tips? I know that I need to soak my manifold and turbo bolts with some PB blaster, and that it will be easier to pull the manifold and install the turbo and the maniflold assembeled together.
I remember someone saying to fill the oil tube and spin the turbo to lube the berings before I crank it? Kinda fuzzy on that one...
A little more knowledge would be helpful...
TIA!!!

Attach your oil drain tube before you install the trubo, and some say take you mainfold off and others dont. Ive taken mine off twince, and left the manifold on both times and had no trouble. I think thats kinda personal preferance.
It is a good idea to put some oil in the intake side of the turbo after its on and spin it to get it lubed.
Its pretty simple, just make sure the oil drain is on first.

Also, I had a lot easier time with the passenger side wheel and the inner fender off. I took the manifold off each time I did the R&R of the turbo. It made it easier for me by myself. It also allowed for the proper TQ spec on the turbo to manifold bolts. Next time, if there is one, I will do studs on the manifold to make it even easier.

Thanks for the tips so far...
I think that I am going to remove the manifold, I'm thinking about getting it coated soon, so getting it loose this time would probably help...

Its pretty simple...Pulling the manifold is probably easier untill you go to put it back on those gaskets are aggravating. I would definately get the oil drain tube on first, when i put my turbo that was the last thing i did, lets just say it took about 2 and a half hours to finally get the oil drain tube on
As far as pre lubing, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt but when i got mine it already had a little oil in it..hope this helps

ive installed a couple turbos I agree with most stated above. pull the turbo and manifold together its easier that way I think. you may have someone help you lift it out of the engine bay its kind of heavy. I did the prelube thing also it seemed to work good. you may use an oil can and put some clean rotella oil in it or whatever you prefer and lube it up. a 64 should be a good all around turbo.
yeah make sure to take the oil drain loose from the block as opposed to taking it off the turbo, that way you can get those two bolts and gasket back in while its on a bench as opposed to in the engine bay. I didnt know the tube came loose from the block so i did it the hard way. on top of that, my compressor was clocked about 10 deg too far towards the block so the wastegate covered up the drain hole and inner bolt. that one bolt took me all morning, and lets just say the gasket got scrapped for alot of RTV. I aint proud of it, but i was carefull and it worked.
also if you have an electronic wastegate, make sure you get the jumper, or youll have to remove the sensor from stock turbo and seal it up.
