Turbo for Auto

There as been a lot of talk about turbos for the handshackers lately, but what about for the lazy crowd. I am looking at the HTTs. I am going to do injectors after the turbo. What have you experiences been with turbos for the autos? I do not want to limit myself with a small turbo but I do not want it to lag.

If you tow, Silver62. Or any variant of a 62/74/14. There are too many options.

if you are not towing heavy, go BIG! i went with the II SB. its a lil laggy, but not nearly as bad as i though it was going to be. and with my boost controller it spools even faster. Still very drivable..

You pay for everything, real big singles have some lag, even with Smarty and some sticks. 62's will you leave wanting a little more when your getting silly with the go pedal. Twins, well those babies leave you a little thin in the wallet with an angry spouse. Pick your medicine.

Funny...

The three singles in my last truck left me with an empty wallet and angry fiancee...

For the new truck, she told me "NO, you're NOT messing around this time. You know you want twins, so that's what you're going to get the first time around!"

And yes, she meant turbos, not kids...

Buuuuuuuut, since I'm impatient and can't wait to scrape all the cash together at once, I'm going to get a 62/65/13 or a 62/71/13. I'm leaning towards the smaller one for better spooling (knowing I'm doing twins) but if one turbo was as far as I was going to go I'd be buying a 62/71/13. No way would I get another 66. Surging monster it was, even with a six-speed. I hated towing with that thing! Smoke, spool, bark, shift, smoke, spool, bark, shift, smoke, spool, bark shift. I had to tow on low settings to make it driveable. Also, it would surge1800rpm going up a hill with just a couple of dirtbikes in the back.

I had none of these negative traits with the SPS62...

I'm sure the SB or SPS66 (or similar) is awesome if you just drive the truck. I always thought my 66 would be a good turbo for an auto, 'cause once it's spooled, it rips. 12-55psi in a flash, HANG ON! It would spin the tires in 3rd when the boost hit (my six-speed). It just bummed me out to shift and loose boost again. I bet my truck would have been a low 13 second truck if I had an auto.

But I still wouldn't want to tow with it.

Deciding on a turbo is hard. Thanks for your input. I may be towing heavy but not that often. I think I will get a 62/71/13 and Flux 2s(i think) and play it safe. That should be plenty for the smarty and a pressure box.

With that turbo (62/71/13ss) don't go with flux 2's IMHO get some flux 1's. If you install a 64/71/13ss then get flux 2's.

If you have a real tight TC it will make the turbo lag worse. With the Smarty I beat you can tune around it with Flux injectors.

I would imagine it would spool pretty fast. a flux 3.3 made a huge difference on spooling a 71mm so flux2s should get a 64mm going real good

I just got the BD Super B Single, great little turbo, still easing into it but already I notice more power, quicker, with lower EGT's. I tow quite a lot and wanted something that spooled quick, but could still have a little fun around town. Best part is it can be upgraded to BD's twin system.

Wow Ridiculies, you upgraded your stock 60/60/9 to a 57/65/12

All that you did was free up the exhaust a little and down sized your compressor capabilities. If you plan on BD twins, great, but if you are staying with that turbo, you hurt your wallet more than anything.
