Question Turbine housing upgrade?

On the early trucks it was common place to upgrade the hot gas side and leave the compressor alone if you werent getting to far from the original turbos map. My thought on the factory turbo on the 04.5 and up is ovously its pretty effic. guys run 500+ hp on them. But i question how that punny 9cm keeps the temps in check, kind-of. I have pretty aggresive fueling and only see 1350 even cooler with the boost fooler. My question is are there turbine housing upgrades to like a 12-14-16 cm is'nt the compressor up to having a larger T.H. for guys that need a drop in egt.s, the stock compressor is 54mm correct. If this is available ive just never seen it advertised. Thanks

As far as I know you can't replace the exhaust housing on the 3rd gen turbos like you could on the HX-35 and HX-40.

I like the spoolup of the tiny housing but it would be nice to have a larger housing for better EGT control.

As far as I know the stock compressor size is 62mm on the 04.5 and up trucks. The compressor was a little smaller on the earlier 3rd gens, 57mm I believe.

I don't get the spoolup is quick. I've put the bigger houseing on the 12v and it wasn't noticable. I still wonder why no one is putting bigger exhaust houseings on these turbos. If our fuel MPG was better this way I might agree but from what I've hear/seen the MPG isn't affected by the exhaust houseing.

I think Piers Diesel Research tried modding the stocker a while back. The consensus seemed to be that it caused a lot of turbo bark. I don't think PDR offers them any more.

dodge finally gave us a turbo thats efficent in the range that a lot of us mod up to 400-500hp. Now we just need to match a T.H. with it/ if the comp. is 62 ? Man i see lots of people buying 62/14 and so forth we need a 12-16 to tune and met our needs. I think this turbo does a great job in the 40 psi range and some of us run the to closer to 50 not good.

I thought the newer turbos were like a 56/9? Am I wrong?

I know the turbine housing is a 9 cm but not sure about the compressor. I just remember how much difference it made on my 99 going from the 12 to the 14. Might need more fuel to light it but i bet a 16 would work nice on these 04.5 + turbos.

The compressor wheel on the 600 series is 62mm, I have a article saved on my other computer from cummins with all the specs on it. That why I figured it was worthless for me to drop $1500 to get a 62-12 to keep spoolup close to stock and loose some heat on the top end.

Ya thats what im talking about. Comp. is fine just a little more t.h. whithout spending for the price of a whole turbo. Heck the 14 i put on my 99 was 160.00 and i bought a 16cm before for another truck and it was 170.00. The turbo companys may not want such a simple upgrade known or even out there. If i was going to replace the whole turbo id surly get a 64 or 66x12 or 14. And were dealing with a waste gate here too, recken wed be could get buy with out a w.g. are the aftermarket pumps people are buying still wastegated or are some not?

Can you check that article? 'Cause I really don't think the stock turbo has a 62mm compressor. A Super B turbo only has a 57mm wheel.

I measured them both. The stock charger is 61/62mm and the super B is 57/58mm....no mistake.

Stock turbo on a 600 is good for 500hp on a truck but its not an efficient 500hp.
Its going to fry an engine sooner or later at that power level.

Just spend the money and get a good 62mm aftermarket charger and you will be pretty happy.....

Thanks Pourin. I think I'll stick with the planned 62/12, and if I have a little extra get the HTT 62/71/13.

We've been modifying the stock 600 series turbo with very good luck. On an 06 1 ton dually with crazy larry on it, it barely touches 1,400 and then backs down to 1,350 for the rest of the run (@130 mph).
