Truck Bed Covers?

Im in the market to buy a truck bed cover. I was curious what everybody recommends. I need something that leaves my bed totally open at times.

I'm getting one of the fold-a-covers installed tomorrow. Go to the links section and search it out. It will allow you to run a fifth wheel or remove the cover or use a section of it. Kind of expensive.

I have the folding cover from Advance Cover. Love it.

Its light, folds up to the front if I want. Also opens at the front so I can keep oil, fuel additive out of the cab. If the need arises, I can /remove it completely with two small bolts.

One complaint, the lock on the rear of the cover is cheesey. The front panel locks good, by locking the latch mechanism. On the rear they skipped that and try to lock just to the tailgate, it SUCKS. I redrilled the keylock to lock the rear mechanism as well, then got a separate lock for the gate.

Other than that, its great. I like not having only partial access to the box like with a fibreglass unit, not to mention you need a stout friend to help lift them off.

The roll covers are popular, but I was afraid of gravel and mud getting into the slides as I am off-road somewhat.

I got the Pace Edwards Roll Top...so far so good, it will open all the way,1/2 way,or 1/4 of the way with a locking mechanism...they are kinda expensive up here in Canada...about $1000.00 installed...but that's only about $700.00 US. There's a pic in my gallery of it closed on my truck. P.S. I think the newest models open up with 1 foot incraments and have a dome light inside the box. Good luck,Mark.

I've been going throught the same dilemma. I had an Extang on my 97 Ram, and it was nice and durable. I had a Ford-issue snap cover on my just-traded PSD, it's quality left a lot to be desired (much like the rest of the truck ).

I *think* I have decided on the Extang RT. It looks nice (in the pictures), and there is a dealer only about 10 minutes away from me. Anyone have any experience with this cover?

I have the Roll-N-Lock bed cover on mine. I had a hard time with it at first of staying closed. The installer said it was because of the stiff suspension that when I ran across anything ruff it would open up about 1/4 of the way. I ended up shiming the rails at the backend of the bed (8') inward so there was less play in the cover. This seems to have worked in keeping it closed. Other than that it has been a good cover for my needs.

Hard cover

Try a "Undercover" bed cover. It is made in Rodgersville, MO out an ABS plastic and is very durable. Form and fit is very good. Can be painted to match truck. Remove to split rings in the front and pop off two struts and remove and hang on the wall with hooks provided by the compay. Total weight is about 40#. I have had one on a truck for two years and it still looks good. -TJ-

Well I ended up getting Pi$$ed off at the guy selling me the fold-a-cover and ended up putting the access cover on mine and I like it alot. Did the install myself and it only took bout an hour. And that included drinking a six pack and bs'ing with a neighbor. The cover looks just like eswartz's.................

Hard Folding cover works great. Even keeps all the water out. But dust can still get in.

I wish I had gone with the hard folding cover.
When I bought my cover, I had no plans to get a 5th wheel, but, plans have changed.

Thumbs up SnugLid SL

Take a look at a SnugLid SL! It's the latest bed cover from SnugTop. It's very strong and locks the tailgate closed. It is perfectly flat except for the keyhole whick only sticks up about 1/8 of an inch, so no "cheesy" key hole cover . Probably the best thing is that it clamps in the bed! This means you won't have any holes drilled in the bed and it can be taken off easily.
