trany temps

what are you guys seeing for trany temps when your pulling. I was pulling a 37' 5th wheel travel trailer today and was hitting over 220 degrees. seems really high to me? egts never got over 1150 but that tranny temp really bugs me. it goes as high as 180 not pulling nothing.

any input would be appreciated

Yes, Please. Id like to hear some comments on this myself.

Ray, I just got my tranny gauge hooked up when I added the Mag-Hytec Double Deep pan. I had no clue what my trans temps were running until then. Since hooking it up........and just driving around town............mine seems to be in the neighborhood of 110-130 degrees in stop and go traffic. It takes it a little while to even get that warm. I would expect mine to run some cooler with the MH pan which holds 4 additional quarts of fluid over stock.

I would think 180 not pulling would be a little on the high side. I haven't pulled yet since adding the MH so I don't know about that temp for comparison.

Temperatures you see will depend on several things. Where you put your probe will make a big difference. When I had my probe in the pan (like TexasCTD) my gauge almost never moved off 140, but when I move the probe to the hot trans line I now see 180-190 in City driving (torque converter not locked up stop and go) with the truck empty. If I turn the overdrive off (converter locks in 3rd gear about 35mph) trans will run cooler. If you are seeing 220 in stop and go driving that is probably normal, If you are seeing 220 on the hiway thats pretty hot.

Anybody else got any comments on tranny temps on the 48RE? What temps are you seeing on your Tranny gauges pulling and not pulling? City and highway? What is considered to high? 220 with the probe in the pan?

If you are pulling 10 or 12k up in the Rockies......what would you expect to be normal temp? At what point should you be pulling over and letting things cool down?

I tow my 5er in the Rockies but not until next month. I installed my gauges but have not
towed yet to see trans temps. My sensor in in the pan and I can barely get it off the 100
degree mark right now. I'll wait til things heat up and report back after camping for the
first time this yr.

I installed my transmission gauge about 2 months now. I started with the temperature probe in the test port side of the transmission it measurer 100* to 125*. I got a new transmission pan with 2 extra quarts and installed the probe in the pan. It still only reads 100* to 125* even on long trips.

I think your temps are normal. My probe is in the pan and in normal driving the guage shows 140-150 which really equates to 180-190. I towed a couple weekends ago and had to sit in some bad traffic and the guage showed 200-210 which is really 240-250. I think you are OK until it gets up around 280+.
I had to back my trailer into a muddy yard and I ended up using 4LO and had a difficult time getting it in there. After about 10 minutes of fighting this the trans guage showed a max of 220. Now that was working the trans pretty hard as the trailer weighed in at probably 9500lb and I didn't really have any airflow to cool things down.
If you are really concerned, just get another trans cooler. It never hurts to be cautious......

I talked with Bill Kondolay of DTT about tranny temps. He said that on the freeway your transmission will run between 130* to 150*, and in town about 180*. He also said that if your temps get to 240* shut your truck off, (do not idle) and let the transmission cool. He says that 240* is the critical temp and above will cause damage.

Big Bob,

Did Bill say why you should shut the truck off if temps got to 240? I always thought you should stop but let it idle so the trans cooler could still work. I am sure Bill knows what he is talking about, no doubt. But, I would like to know the reason behind shutting it off. Thanks for the info.

TexasCTD,

Bill said to specifically "Shut if off, do not let it idle". I really didn't question him, however watching my own temps when I come to a stop and put it in neutral my temps always go higher.
