Towing twins - tuning?

I am putting a '03 CTD in my '99 Ford. I am getting the twins bug and thinking about running towing twins, to get around 500-550hp. I have a FASS 150/150 and head studs plus a BTS trans. I am assuming I will need a modified CP3 at the least. What turbo would you guys recommend stacking with my stock turbo? Do you have to run a programmer as well and which one? Before the idea of twins I was leaning towards the VanAaken C5.

for the twins setup you are looking for (using the stock turbo), contact IdahoCTD here on this site, or visit MPI's website at http://www.maximizedperformanceinc.com

apparently they really know their stuff when it comes to turbos, and especially twins. I've heard that MPI has a kit that uses an S400 turbo and your stocker that is very well refined with top notch fit and finish.

As for the modified cp3, yeah you'll probably need one to feed at least a small set of injectors (40hp or larger) and a Smarty programmer to meet your 550hp goal on that '03 engine. You could probably get 475'ish (maybe 500) with just the smarty alone though I imagine (with the twins included of course).

Yeah I called and left a message at MPI, so waiting on a return phone call. Is Nathan's piping steel or aluminum?

I figure I would stop off at Joe Hellmann's on my way home and chat with him.

Go with the HT3B or a S400 and call joe hellman he has the mock up stuff and is only in richmond not too far a drive for you and can have the stuff in and out in no time for a great price. He's the one thats been handling relentless' fab work. And you cant go wrong with some small stixs, and a smarty on top of all that.

One caveat to this... that is the stock 03 turbo. That is much smaller than say the 04.5 and up turbo. I would have to say regardless of whether it is a s400 or ht3b, that small top turbo may limit you to around 500hp. Plus the 9cm EH limits flow to the primary and makes it harder to spool. See if you can upgrade to at least an hx35 or an 04.5 and up turbo that'll get you to be able to support 550 or 600 hp respectively.

Twins in the Ford engine bay are not an easy task. I'm sure Nathan will tell you he would need the truck to build twins. I know Hellmann has done a set, but I would imagine with as tight as all the clearances are he would need the truck also. Here are a few pics to give you an idea.

I've got MPI twins and I LOVE THEM. They are perfect in every way. Nathan told me when I first got em that the stock 03 turbo would work, but that I should upgrade as soon as possible. Word to the wise, listen to the experts! LOL That stocker grenaded after less than a month. I upgraded to an hey351cw out of an 06 and all is well. You will love them. My next set will come from Nathan, the set after that, and the set after that. I cannot say enough good things about these turbos. Theyre worth every dime.

One more thing, my setup (according to Nathan) should be able to support 650 keeping everything cool, but I wouldn't tow at that level (not that Im there yet anyway), but I dial the electronics down for towing.

94ttss,

I have been meaning to call you for a while, I haven't dropped the engine in yet, I just received my BTS this past week, so soon.

Would you be willing to get me a parts list on where you got all you adapters, mounting brackets and flanges from. I spoke to Joe and I am waiting on a call back but he says he uses steel (sch. 40) only, and I would rather set mine up with stainless like yours. I should be able to order any degree elbows and fab up my own pipes. Won't be the same quality as pharmaceutical stainless but still be much nicer than steel. Looks to be because of the lack of room you had to run 3" tubing?

Joe said the S400 is the way to go because of the orientation of where the flanges will be. I need to look more into this.

Thanks guys for the replies. I guess I need to start looking around for a 04.5-up turbo. Any suggestions.

Stop in at Joe Hellmann's he is great to work with, he deffinately knows his stuff. I have seen a few trucks he has done custom work on when I went to his shop and everything is perfect, he might have the mockup stuff for a Ford, I know he does a lot of the CR conversions in them...

Consensus seems that my stock turbo will be fine. With that in mind what do you think, S400 or the K31 turbo and why? Also, I would like to be around 500hp, what injectors would be a good combo with the twins, modded CP3 and a smarty?

Ive got a k31 under my stocker and spool is instant. Makes 5 psi going down the road by itself, tops out at 55 psi roughly, 1200f. Downside is it is longer then the s400, so fabbin is a bit trickier

Flux 2's all the way! You won't be disappointed. Great for towing and mileage doesn't suffer.
