i read a law in a texas handbook that said vehicles can not produce smoke for more than 10 seconds and the smoke has to be cleared up in 10 seconds, it cant just linger around.

Thanks guys, I saw the guy run up behind me and write something down on his center console. Yhe smoke blew less than 10 seconds but it might of lingered longer if traffic had not ran through it.

ive been called in before for passing illegally....the lady wrote my plate down, called the cops and everything. I watched her talk to the cops while following me down the road. she was all dramatic about it and made sure i knew what she was doing....I blew a cloud of black smoke, turned to a side street and haven't heard a word from anyone!

Nothin will give you that awsome "im gonna get a ticket feeling" Like lookin in the rearview to see a cop bustin through the diesel smoke cloud you laid. And its kinda hard to hide when you gotta 6" stack goin through the bed.

what i've heard down here in florida is that you can get an excessive smoke ticket if the smoke is constant, and not just on acceleration..smoke on acceleration is ok as long as its not an astronomical amount that it would cause someone to have an accident because they cant see...

ive got stopped and got my a** ripped a few times for noise and smoke. no tickets for it yet. one cop got out and the first thing he said was, you wanna go to jail and I wasnt even speeding. I had went under a bridge in downtown Indy and made some noise he pulled me over and flipped out. of course the 01 dodge beside me that is ungodly loud, ran from the cops and he thought it was funny.

I am a police officer in Michigan. Looking at the Michigan Vehicle Code you can not have excessive smoke, loud exhaust or muffler. BUT, it also states that Diesel is an alternate fuel and alternate fuel is an exception to the excessive smoke and noise. Let the Coal Roll..............
Not sure for other States.

I'm pretty sure that if the guy went the extra mile to file a complaint that you could get into trouble. I mean it's kinda along the same lines as reporting some jacka** in a rice burner weaving in and out of traffic at high speeds cutting people off. The cop didn't see it, but if they got the license plate number call you in to court, they can use the person reporting it as a witness for the state. But the chances are the guy isn't going to take it that far, after about 20mins he probably forgot all about it.
i wouldn't worry too much..
