Tone ring mod...box for Mileage, any benefit?
Tone ring mod...box for Mileage, any benefit?
I did the tone ring mod (Advanced timing, similar to Rokktech) on my 04.5 and picked up about 1-1.5mpg. I have been looking at various boxes for a little more power for towing and some improved mileage on long road trips.
I do not know how the various boxes work (XZT, Smarty Jr., etc..). Would the advanced timing provided by the tone ring mod, effect the performance of these boxes? Would I be better off returning the timing back to stock and then adding a box? Any help would be appreciated.

Tone ring mod is when you remove the tone ring from the front of the engine and elongate the dowel pin hole to advance the timing. There should be tons of postings about it if you do a search.
