Search in the perfromance and accesories section...there are probably a 100+ posts relating to the mod.
To answer your question though...the tone ring is the toothed wheel that is attacehd to the crank pulley to generate a voltage at the crank sensor that is then sent back to the ECM so that the ECM can calcualte the crank postion and determine injection timing as result. By modding the tone ring (or installing a modded sensor) you can fool the ECM into advancing or retarding the injection timing (advancing is usually benefitial both for power and mileage).

There was a thread about 2 wks ago. I found it then and did mine. On mine, just filing the dowel hole allowed almost 1/8" travel which was plenty on mine. Too much and it will rattle - mine rattled on takeoffs but I filed the bolt holes to get some extra. I started at 2.17 degrees. I backed mine off to 1.5 degrees - .105". About .070"=1 degree. I gained .5 mpg - went from 20.2 to 20.7 but I need to use more tanks to know for sure. Craig

Yep, my bad ..... identical to yours. I was doing a search for his answer, copied and pasted, then hit "post" and I think you must have done the same thing just a few seconds ahead of me. If I had seen yours, I would not have hit my "post" button .........
