Which tires?!!! Michelin AT2, Nitto Dura, Bridgestone Revo, Hankook?
I am on my 2nd set of stock mich tires and this thread is exactly where I am. I tow less that 9k so a D will work for me, I think. My son just got some AT2's and they look and ride sweet on his 2500 QC hemi. The MS2's look more hwy and have a 70k warranty, for what it's worth but only 13/32 tread, the AT2's have 17/32 tread depth. Neither are E rated in 285's but have same weight rating at 65 psi. I probably won't get the miles or mpg out of 285's as the 265 E's but might not notice the difference. The Firestones look like they could makwe some noise as they wear and the Nito's look like they could ride a little hard. So, unless some one has an overwhelming argument for one I guess the jury is still out.
As nice as the unloaded ride might be with D rated tires, I'm not willing to run them on a truck that calls for E rated tires. If I ever do have a problem or accident while towing I don't want there to be a question about the suitability of the tires I chose for the truck. That could go badly during a civil lawsuit
I have decided that I'm going to wait until I get back from vacation mid July to buy tires. Between work and vacation I'm only going to be in town driving my truck 10 days between now and July 13.
I'm leaning towards buying the Bridgestones in a 285/70R17 from Costco. I kind of feel like I'm cheating myself if I don't try the 285's. The Bridgestones have a 30 day trial, if I decide I don't like them or the size I'll have the option to take them back for the Michelin AT2 or something else. I may change my mind between now and then, so keep those opinions coming.

I used to run Michelins and BFG Ats. I then started reading the reviews on the Hankook tires. They seemed to be just what I was looking for. The tire shop that I bought them from said out of all the Hankook AFMs they had sold they only had one come back for out of round.
I tried a set and I have to say they are way better than the Michelins and the BFGs I have tried. They are excellent in the rain ! They are excellent in the snow. My truck feels like its on rails travelling through the Rogers Pass in BC towing my 10000lb sled trailer in the crazy snow and ice. I have almost 30000km on them and they look new still.
I have heard the Revo's weigh 59 lbs and the Hankook AFMs in the 285/70/17 weigh 75 lbs. That's quite a difference ! I would give them a try, I am very impressed with them so far. Hankook has a great product and will
give the others a run for the money !

Apparently Costco has relaxed a bit. I spoke to the managers at two different locations, both of them said 285/70R17 were fine as long as I selected E rated tires. The Costco web site states "The final decision to install a tire on a vehicle will be made by the Costco tire center manager or supervisor. The tire must meet all vehicle manufacturers’ safety standards and specifications."
Well, I made a decision today, I ended up with the 265/70R17 Michelin AT2 tires. The Bridgestones in 285/70R17 are on a national backorder since I started looking in May with no end in site. I was fatigued reading tire threads and over analyzing, so when offered a good deal on the Michelins at Discount Tire today I went with it. The sales guy gave me the $70 mail in rebate instantly. I have only put 4 miles on them thusfar, so I really can't judge them yet, but I think they will be fine.
The benefit of the stock size should be better towing ability, better acceleration/braking, more stable ride. Maybe I'm just growing up...

I gave the M/S2 a good look before going with the A/T2. The M/S2 has a 70K mileage warranty and looked like a great tire, but I was concerned I wouldn't have the ability to do light offroad if the need arose. I'm going to be moving out of the desert (hopefully) before these tires wear out.
Try the AFM's. Excellent tire. Better than the BFG A/T in snow, rain and ice. Seem to be wearing excellent. I think they are better than the Revos and the Michelins. Excellent for towing thus far. I use them on one of Canada's worst winter highways between Calgary and Revelstoke. Very good choice in my book. Try them and see !
