Tires (again!)

Really close to time to bite the bullet and get some new shoes for the truck. Running Toyo AT's right now and for the most part happy with them. Not so much in sand and really loose stuff but in general doing pretty good. Have been looking at the Hankook and the Goodyear Duratrac and am curious to any feedback you all might have. I'm thinking of going to a 35 or 315 instead of my 285's just for a little more flotation in the sand and for a tad more height. I'm not wild about not having an E tire but am less concerned about that then getting a good setup for this truck.

Most of my driving is highway but when I do get off road it's rocks, some sand and the occasional mud and snow we get down here in NM. Do some towing but not a whole lot and when I do the heaviest I do is my toy hauler which is a max of about 10K and that's about 650-700 on the tongue.

Thanks in advance.

Just bgt a set of 35/12.5/17, Pro Comp Xtremes. They are a directional tire and IMO, sharp looking. (see gallery if interested).
Also the quietest A/T's I've ever driven. So far I'm very impressed. Only question is how many miles I'll get, but with 40,000 mile warranty, can't see being hurt to badly. Reports on DTR are over 40,000. I could not get 35,000 from my Toyo A/T's

Pro Comp Xtremes are on sale during June...$100.00 instant rebate on 35's!

Well, I had the same toyos on my 04 and was ok with them...not great enough of a tire to buy again, but ok.
I really like the looks of the new goodyear duratrac, and I think most, if not all come in Load E.
Based on what you use your truck for I would recommend the BFG AT. but again not easy to find a Load E.
I too considered the Hankook AT, I believe it comes in a Load E, but after reading some of the threads on this site...Im concerned with the quality and treadlife of the tire.

Sorry, not much help. If you get the Duratracs post some pix!!!

Yeah, I've got about 22K miles on my Toyo's and not sure they would see 35K. I've done the BFG's before and to be honest had zero luck with them. Square, would not balance, wandered all over the road. Just won't go back to them even though others have had good luck. I also like the looks of the Duratrac but don't want to be the tester either! From what I've read the Hankook in the AT, the RF10 or whatever it is has gotten really good reviews for about everything.

Somebody has tried these, pipe in please!

Just went to Pro-Comp Radial ATs. 35x12.5x17 from BFG 315/70/17. It is a world of difference. Smoother ride and works good in the mud so far, nothing extreme. BFGs only lasted about 35,000 with rotation every 10,000 miles. I played heck on getting the right air pressure in them to get the best ride and wear. Had really bad DW issues also.

Just replaced my Toyo A/T's with Toyo M/T's. I got 45k out of the A/T's and should have got more - I was lazy about rotating them. The M/T's seem to be a much better tire - ride better, "E" rated. I'll be rotating these every 5k since they are so spendy.

I just bought the Toyo MT's as well. LOVE EM!! I have not had a big tire ride this well and not take crap load of lead to balance them. One tire only has 3.75oz on them. The ride like glass!

I'd really like to go Toyo MT's but am really concerned about not getting many miles out of them for the extra cost. Just have a hard time spending that much money on a tire that probably is only going to go as long as the AT and is 90 bucks each more. That's why I was looking at the Duratrac as it seemed kinda in-between in tread. Got my AT's rotated one more time and should last another 3 months before I get completely tired of them and get new tires for the fall and hunting season!

the key is rotating them every oil change and having them balanced a couple times a year. my buddy got over 40k out of his MT's and we talked the other day and he is going to get another set.

Rebalance everytime you put it in gear!

'Dwiningermn' - I could find almost no info on either that particular Hankook tire or on the Goodyear Duratrac.
You have any? Always interested in what's new.

There isn't much info I could find on the Duratrac outside the Goodyear site which just tells us they are the best and you can drive on anything. The Hankook has a few out and the reviews for the most part seem good to very good. I would jump on Toyo MT's if they weren't so expensive and one other thing.......what am I getting myself into by going with a 315 or 35 on a factory rim? I know it's really too narrow but is it going to matter that much in the long run? I think factory rims are what? 8"? 8.5"? 35's are suppose to go on a 10" rim so I'm sort of figuring that might impact the life pretty seriously as well. May be smarter to wait until I get some different rims to go that big.

No worries, Mate!
On a 16" factory wheel... I was always fighting the 35's a bit. Had some 16x10" Welds for a while... which works very well.
But with the 17" factory wheels (and 1" less sidewall to contend with), the 35's handle nicely.
That's my big question .... Do I like these Pro Comp Xtremes so much because I went to 17" wheels... or are they that great a tire??

If changing wheels, 9" works well. 10" if you don't mind them sticking outside the fenders. Personally, I don't care for that look.
That's why I sold the Welds.
But with factory 8x17 wheels, you won't have a problem with 35's. No negative reports I know of.
Just keep rears lower in pressure to help them ride flat and wear evenly.
Do the chalk line test!

Okay, thanks, I've not run that wide of a tire before, generally stick with a little narrower one but out here in the soft sand and most rocks it works better with some width with these heavy trucks.

As for your Pro Comp question, I'm not sure but I've heard so many different reviews on them it's hard to keep track. They do have a lot of meat on them but I've heard some are Cooper built and that's terrible and some aren't and that's great. Just not sure. Sometimes you can get a good deal I do know that and they might be worth the chance. Worked out for you I guess!

I got 45k on my A/T's being very lazy on rotating - I think I did it 2 times. If you take a look at the specs on the A/T's and M/T's, the A/T's have 16/32 of tread and the M/T's have 21/32's. I really think that if I rotate these every 5k, that I should get overr 50k on them.
