Tach Issue - thoughts
Tach Issue - thoughts
Cruising down the freeway tonight at approx 70mph and the tach showing 500 rpm.....clearly not correct unless someone put in a 6 spd auto and didnt tell me.
I dont have a clue on how tachs work so sorry if stupid question, but is there any connections i can check or anything else i could debug before i take to mechanic? Will tach reading be linked to computer reading of tach eg impact fueling or shifting or other impact to performance or is guage unrelated?

Do a YouTube search on the repair Spooler is talking about - there's a great video there and it looks to be simple and helpful. My truck has the same issue so I am going to fix mine over the holiday season.

I wasn't really looking forward to repairing my tach issue with a solder gun, etc. and came across an ad for the following site: www.usspeedo.com
I ordered a new cluster for $250 (plus $15 shipping to Canada and a $200 core charge). Also had them upgrade the faces and needles to a more modern look for an additional charge of $200 (Aqua). Not sure how much the dealer charges for stock, but to get a refurbished cluster with a new look for $450...I think it's a pretty good deal. The swap should only be 30 minutes.

No repair is ever free. There's always the tool cost and more importantly, my time. I would have had to purchase a decent soldering gun, magnifying glass and solder and hope that I didn't screw anything up doing the repair...and then hope that the fault I was fixing is the same as seen on the net. If I mess up, my truck is off the road for who knows how many days.
Purchasing a new cluster I'm purchasing value: I'm assured it works, all gauges in it have been tested and my truck is only under repair for an hour, if that.
The peace of mind and quick turn around is worth my money. Everyone's situation is different.

I did. But there is also another fix that is sometimes required as well. I mentioned it earlier in this thread. It's on YouTube and requires soldering.
My point again is that I'd rather pay a couple of hundred bucks for a refurbished cluster that has been tested in its entirety than monkey around with a couple of fixes on just the tach, that may or may not work, preventing me from driving my truck for a few days should it go wrong.
Ultimately I like knowing I've got a cluster that'll likely last me another 8 yrs, or better. THAT is worth $200 - to me, but not everyone.

I see and agree with you. Just wasn't sure you saw my link.
I was going to try the solder fix but also didn't want things to go wrong and almost ordered a new cluster, for similar reasons as you, but then saw the other fix so figured I'd give it a try before spending the cash. Worked perfect for me.
Post up a pic when you get the new cluster in. i would like to see the difference with the Aqua color!!
