Swiss Cheese?

Hello, first post. I'm thinking about getting a Quadzilla EXT tow box or maybe wait for the Smarty to become available for the 3rd gen. trucks. I'm looking for extra boost while towing since I have the SO engine. I was wandering, since I'm just looking at a mild power increase would I be better off saving the $$ and swiss cheesing my stock intake box and putting in a free flowing dropin filter or go ahead and get an aftermaket air box like a Volant or AFE? I'm not looking to race just some extra power. Thanks.
On a side note does anyone have a clue when the Smarty will be available for the 3 gen.? The website just says soon after the 2nd gen. .

My .02 goes for the swiss cheese. I did it about a month ago. I think its the way to go for 100hp or less. Go with an AFE proguard 7 drop-in & you'll flow
all you need for small-moderate hp. Aftermarket= $$$.

I drilled about 20 holes on the bottom of stock air box. I used 1/2 paddle bit

Go do a "Search" for swiss cheese airbox. Theres a guy named Hoss who has some excellent pictures. You just basically bore holes in your stock airbox to allow greater flow.

Some will argue the filter is the restrictive part more so than the box but I disagree. When I did mine I got turbo whine that I didn't have before. Everything else is stock on my intake side other than an Amzoil filter.

The stock filter may be more restrictive than the aftermarkets, but the box is
restrictive more so, in my opinion.

I mounted a 4" 90 degree drain pipe elbow at the bottom of mine.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll save myself some $$$ and do the swiss cheese method for now.
Anyone heard any updates on the Gen. 3 smarty?
