Question Swiss cheese air filter housing???

How effective is cutting extra holes in the air filter housing? Who makes the best flat panel replacement filter?

don't know how effective it is for performance, but it's very effective for sound! (so I would assume it helps performance)

I swiss cheesed the filter housing on my 91 and the sound was great.

but why limit yourself to a flat panel replacement filter? just buy a good conical for $5-10 more and be done with it.

why not just download the heatshield template and put on a BHAF??

If you ever had to sell your baby (God forbid) then your stock airbox will be intact.

OK, I'll bite.
Where do we download the heatshield template, and will it work with a 1st gen?

it won't work for the 1st gens, but there's no need for it on the 1st gens... the filter isn't right next to the turbo like it is on the 2nd gens...

I kinda like teh filterminder, even if it does sit on zero for the most part. Of course, if it sits on zero, is the motor really starving for any air?

you can still use the filter minder - get some PVC and drill a 3/4" hole (I think) and install the minder.

Evil,
I don't mean to disagree with you (never argue with a Dr) but this is from a post Rod had out there a while ago:
I'll go one step further here, and add that the factory filter minder on ANY aftermarket air system is completely worthless. The filter minder uses a spring thats calibrated for the factory airbox, ie: factory turbo inlet hose pressures. As the filter plugs, you end up with less and less pressure in the turbo inlet hose, and the filter minder draws down. But again, this will be based on the pressure in the hose from a plugged paper element. I personally clean the oil gauze elements long before this point would ever be reached. And, as a further point, if you have aftermarket fueling on your truck, your air requirements will be different than the stock filter minder is calibrated for. So, while the filter minder may indeed not be drawn down, you may be restricting airflow.

Your best indicator of a plugged filter, if you really don't want to take the time to quickly pop the airbox off the filter? EGTs. If your EGTs seem to be higher than normal for a given piece of road, there is a awful good chance that the filter is plugged.
