super b

i just put on a super b turbo. went to go for a ride to break in the turbo, maybe 5 min into ride under a little acceleration i hear a wine, a very familiar sound. the same sound my stock turbo made when i blew the bearing. so i go back home and pull off the intake and there is tons of shaft play. can anyone help me on why i blew two turbo's the same way? thanks, eric

I do not want to insult you, but did you make sure you put oil in the drain on top of the super B before you started it up. The reason I say that is because I almost forgot to when I installed mine. Not sure if this is a culperate, but all of the bolts were a tad bit loose, even before I had to reclock it on mine. Also I know this won't help you now, but give BD a call as I am sure you will. Plus if I remember, mine made a sound at first also, but after the slow break in of 100 miles it sounded better than ever, sort of like a small turbine on a jet engine.

Not sure if that is correct. My B1 and a buddy's both had a ton of lateral shaft play straight from TAD. Don't ask me why that is but it's the way they are and have run fine. Super B is also built from Switzer components so I would call BD and ask them.

.020" play is normal, anymore and you will usually touch the sides of the housing.
I too have a B1-2 from TAD and mine had the normal play that a new turbo has.

Well, I have not measured mine but I can tell you when I got it new I was like ***. Talked to some other people and discovered it is normal. It certainly doesn't touch but you can grab it and move it plenty... more than you would think would be normal.

So why do they have so much play?

What does the B1-04 compare to? What are the wheel and housing sizes?

Yep…I’d say you got a bum one. You wouldn’t believe the beatings some of these guys put that Super B through, so rest assured it is probably just a manufacturer’s defect. Stuff happens. The part that sucks is BD-Power is not open on the weekends, so by the time you can get a hold of them and they can get a new turbo in your hands, your truck will have been down a week, easy.
