Stuttering under heavy Load?? And other problems..

Hey all..

I am about to the point of pulling my few goodies off of this truck and just keeping it stock. I am fed up with trying to figure out whats wrong with this darn thing.

First thing is the fact that every morning when I go out to start the truck (say after sitting for 8 hours).. The thing belches blue smoke and acts like it's "misfiring" (For lack of a better term) for as long as I don't idle the thing up for 10-20 Seconds to clear it out.. If I don't idle it up at all or long enough.. It will keep smoking blue and "misfiring" but gradually get better over say 3-5 minutes. Some days worse than others. Never a morning without smoke.

Took truck into dealer for this problem and they reflashed the computer.. Smoke went away for about 3 days then came back worse than ever.

Second issue.. Fuel Pressure.. This thing idles with 7.5 PSI out of the lift pump. Is this normal??

Third and the most annoying is when "lugging" the truck to try and get it to smoke a little or sometimes even when trying to pass or merge in traffic with my TST on anything higher than 2/2 (AND IT EVEN DOES IT A LITTLE BIT WITH THE DARN BOX OFF!) it does this weird little stutter with a pretty good puff of black smoke, lasting about 1 second total.. then proceeds to run normal. I don't know how to correctly describe this "Stutter". Weird thing is it's almost like it started happening as SOON as I straight piped it.

Fuel Pressure on the Lift Pump side only dumps down to about 5 PSI when lugging it so I don't think it's a lack of fuel issue.

All of these occurances happen regardless of where the TST is set.. EZ has been off the truck for awhile and the Truck IS straight piped (Stupidest thing I've ever done..... ) 14,600 Miles also.

Could all of this be related Somehow? Is the TST the cause of my problems?? I don't see how because I've gone days on 0/0 and no difference.

ANY HELP AT ALL WOULD BE APPRECIATED!! THANX!

I had morning smoke. Try Howes Meaner Kleaner or some other good quaility diesel injector cleaner. I used a triple dose and it cleared up a day or so later. they carbon up really bad. You could try totaly removing your TST and see if the issue is gone. Also maybe try a new fuel filter. 5PSI is gettin a bit low but I dont think thats it.

Just replaced the Fuel Filter.. No Dice.

I've done a hot dose of Power Service.. But I'll see if I can track down the additive you speak of and give that a try.

Warlord, Your'e fuel pressure is fine and is average for your vehicle. The "shutter" I believe, is caused by two things. One your TST or Edge box is dumping fuel when your are trying to accellerate and two your RPM is too low and don't have enough boost to spool your turbo. once your turbo and boost starts speeding up everything is fine right? If you're going to say drive at very slow speeds, merging etc. take your OD off by pushing in the tow/haul mode. This should help keep the RPM higher and reduce this problem. I normally drive in the tow/haul mode all the time in city driving for this very reason. After you get on the freeway and can go, then take it off.

Yeah.. IT almost seems just like what you are describing it's like it does the stuttering thing at about 10 PSI Boost and then clears right up...

Has my truck always done this then and I'm just now able to hear it because of the straight pipe??

Is it doing any damage to my beloved cummins?

What can I do to fix this problem??

I'm really **** about my vehicle running as smooth as it did stock.. if the TST can't provide a level at least CLOSE to that I will be selling it.

The stutter is the tst

Something to do with the Crank/cam position, just a little out of sync, mine use to throw a code, around 1200 rpm,

It has since grown out of it? No idea why.

Mine also was doing the initial start-up smoke, Put in some Howes meaner cleaner, and ran it hard, heavy and fast, for a tank,

and it instantly got better

Yeah, remove the TST and see if that is the problem. If indeed it is, get in touch with TST and have them fix it.

Lugging the truck makes this "problem" more noticeable. With the valve body and Torque converter.....does the shudder happen more when they are locked and you are lugging it? Lugging the truck can carbon up the injectors pretty quick. Meaner Kleaner once a month and Seafoam once a season keeps them clean. If you had a FASS, Glacier Diesel, RASP, etc. you'd be way ahead in performance. The TST can momentarily drain the supply lines at this low supply pressure. ks

No what I am feeling isn't a driveline shudder.. It's almost what I would call really bad detonation... I'm thinking it's got to be a fueling issue.. I'm going to turn the TST off until I get a FASS. (I say this now.. but I have about ZERO self control!)

Let me tell you what else I've tried as of the last few days..

Haven't finished running the meaner cleaner yet..

I've now purchased a BDDL with Crazy Larry. On Crazy Larry this thing runs like a raped ape and doesn't do the stutter at all.

Is this due to the fact that the CL is fueling in a different manner than the TST?
Is it because I'm adding extra pressure at the injectors with the CL?

Eh Well.. I'm working on a FASS and Trans Right now.. I guess I'm going to go ahead and jump all into this thing.. If all else fails I'll just have to go a different route than TST..

Ohh Yeah..

Where do I run the Seafoam? Is it safe to run in Diesel Vehicles as far as through the fuel system?
