I had a wonderful thing planned. A personalized license plate reading "OPTIMUS" for my truck, but because it has a gross weight of over 9,000lbs., I cannot put a personal tag on it!
How stupid is that? Why a personalized plate has anything to do with weight is rediculous. At least making a distinction between commercial and non-commercial would make more (althought not much) sense than what they are doing!
The only nice thing was that I got to choose my GVWR and my GCVWR for my registration!!!

I was just thinking about that today while driving to work??? Why doesn't D have OPTIMUS for his liscence plates??? They asked me the same question I just told them I wasn't planning being over that weigh?? Just played stupid...
I hate Idaho's GVR tags...

Unfortunately, the GVWR is on the registration so I can't lie unless I want to then be in trouble later if the truck is over 9,000lbs. which I think it is almost already let alone after the auxilliary tank and accessories!
in NY you register commercial trucks for there max GVWR,not empty weight. If you want pasenger plates here it has or weigh 5500lbs or under empty to get them.Somehow my CTD was tagged in NJ when i got it at 5000lbs ,and tagged as a pass vehicle.so it had pass plates in NJ,when i went to register it,NY DMV told me no way at 5000lb,there computer had 6675 as the empty weight of my truck.I could get it weighed at a certified scale and contest it if i wanted though.I tagged it at 8800 and wanted commercial tags anyway, but you can get away with more in NJ than NY in order to run a HD pickup on the parkways legally.

It doesn't even matter. I can only get a personalized plate IF I say the GVWR is under 9,000lbs. which means, if ever there is a situation in which I am over 9,000lbs., then I am operating my vehicle illegally. The problem is that I will ALWAYS be over 9,000lbs. starting very soon when all my stuff gets done and I certainly will when towing.

I have my vehicle weight listed at 7,800 which was a guess, but after looking it up online I was close, it's supposedly 7810. You figure that is bone dry so add 250 lbs. for fluids (including fuel), plus 400 lbs. extra for wheels and tires, 100 lbs. for my hitch, 60lbs. for my tonneau cover, 100lbs. in stereo, 700lbs. in fuels (in my aux tank) and right there you are up to 9,520lbs. and that doesn't include me, Diesel, or Emily. So figure with all 3 of in the vehicle, and fully loaded with fuel, I will be at 10,100lbs. meaning I have only 400lbs. of legal payload!!
Stupid GVWR! It's a dually!!! I should have lied and said it was 12,500. I did make sure that my GCVWR was recorded as 23,500 at least!

Hey Wiggs.
I used to live in PA, moved from there 5 years ago. So what's the plate going for these days? I can't remember what I paid for both of my truck that were over 9K, but I do remember it being in/around the $150-200 range.
My first plate here in NM for the Dodge 3500 was $35.00, that will change when it renews in March, I think it will go up to around $60-75.
You can get a personalized plate here, they just stipulate your GVW on the registration. Of course as all the states are working to standardize this stuff, things may change. I forget how many years it is, but the Fed DOT has given all the states a certain amount of time to get the state laws in order with the Fed DOT and the Homeland Security stuff.

It's funny, since Ohio does, most people who have exotics around here (and many other two-plate states) don't put the license plate on the front because it requires drilling into the bumper and having this ungodly eyesore. So they either keep it on the front dash or just have it ready should they get pulled over. Personally, it's just laziness on the part of the police. Don't tell me you can't either go around to the other side of the car or simply require head-in parking the way it often is in PA.Anyway, on to the front plates. The plate I may put on the front is one of those European ones. I had some "D WIGGS" ones made for me as a gift many years back and may do an "OPTIMUS" one, but I am afraid with the road armor that (1) there will be no place to put it that looks good and (2) that it will brea up the "blackness" that is Optimus!
No personalized tags, must have front and rear tags, and with commercial tags (I think if it's over 6000#'s which is really low), you have no dump privileges (have to drive to the other side of the island to dump any trash), and you pay double for registration.
Welcome to HIDOT!
Oh, and diesel is $3.70 to $3.90 per gallon....

By the way, how did you like that blast of snow earlier in the week? My younger brother lives near Cambridge and called me hootin' and hollerin' about the 4-6 inches they got.
