Is something else wrong

I have a Quadxilla XZT that is causing me some problems. Maybe it is not the XZT. Two times while towing (about 7,000 pounds) my truck would start running rough and blowing black smoke. Unhook it and go back to stock it ran fine. Called Quad and they told me to send it to them and they would check it out. When I got it back, there was a card that said they checked the box and harness and they were fine. It also said the re-flashed it to the latest code. I installed it today and it would not start. So I pulled it out and checked the harness and all seemed fine. Reinstalled it and it fired right up and seemed to run fine. Buttoned it all up and fired it up again, surging idle and blowing black smoke. Took it off. Could there be something else wrong that only shows up when I install the chip?

I have the ZXT box and have had a few problems but after the last flash (2 months ago) all is well. My truck would surge and sometime run like it had a bad spartplug (yea, I know diesels don't have plugs) . Quad had come out with an extra wire on some of the ZXT boxes that had something to do with the throtle. Don't know if yours has the extra wire but if not maybe your's is one of the problem ones that needs it. Call Quad back and if you can speak to Jeremy as the other party they pass calls to is more sales. Quad has been quite good at dealing with problems so try again. Explain carefully what you have done and what the results have been.

Hope this helps....Don

That is definately not supposed to happen, especially at idle. I don't have an answer as to what else it could be though? I would call Jeremy tomorrow and I will get him to send a replacement module. If it still does it then we definately need to look at the truck.

I have no idea chip or no chip why the thing would try to blow smoke at idle?

The 0148 that was mentioned is something that I really cannot fix. We have made some changes so that we demand a little less fuel from the Cp3 on super hard runs, but if you get that code, I cannot just take it away. The 0148 code is not something you get with just our module or any specific type of module. It just means that something in the fuel system is weak or dirty or there is some problem detected at some point. It does not necessarily mean anything is broke, it just had less fuel than commanded at some point, and I don't mean on the high pressure side.

Do you happen to have a fuel pressure gauge? That would tell a lot if you do.

I will give Jeremy a call. No I do not have a fuel pressure gauge, on the list of things to do. When it was doing the surging idle I do not think I got a check engine light because I did not let it run that long. Thanks for the help.
