So many tuners... only one truck..

OK, I'm trying real hard here not to be the n00b and asking the same ol already answered a 100 times questions. I've used the search, but seem to not quite find what I'm looking for because there is SO MUCH info I'd be reading for a month.... my ADD gets the best of me long before that.

I've got a bone stock 05 2500 with the 48RE auto. We pull the 5th wheel. 29ft, about 9-10K pounds.

I'm looking to add some power probably for a silly reason, but we go camping with a friend. He's a Ford guy. And up till now, I've been watching him get smaller in my rearview when we hit the hills in his 02 Ford... well now he's got a shiny new 06 Ford and swears it will be the other way around now... I'd just like to try to make sure its not

I just read a thread on a manual TC lockup switch.. interesting, and easy enough.

But really I'm looking for a tuner.. whether it be a box or a programmer. So far I'm interested in the BD with the Outlook or the Edge w/Attitude because as I said.. the truck is stock.. no extra guages or anything. And I know when you start changing things, you need to know more... and when pulling I should have that stuff anyway.

It doesn't appear that either one is really the full on favorite around here.. are they really that similar? What are the pros and cons to them? I'm not looking for Crazy Larry or anything too extreme.... really I just want some good SAFE power and a little more information about how the truck is running.. EGT, Boost and I'd like tranny temp. The Edge doesn't appear to support that, but maybe the Outlook does?

Geez.. that got long... sorry..

I have purchased a Diablo Sport Predator tunable performance programer, I have had it now for 2 weeks and currently using the economy tune a 90 hp gain and the milage gain is very impressive 3mpg driving normal speeds in a rural area. This tuner also has diagnostic capabilities and a good price along with a towing tune and a extreme tune. I used a diablo sport on an 03 ford and had the same type of good results.

Consider Quadzilla also.

Take a look at the Quadzilla Xzillaraider and Commander setup. I'm basically in the same position as you, wanting a boost while towing. I installed the Xzillaraider standard this past weekend and I'm thoroughly impressed with the results. I haven't had it on long enough to comment on fuel economy but the power is definately there. The Commanders have a ton of features, aparently more than the others, and the production units are due out this month (test units are out there with no complaints). As soon as its released I'll be adding it to my setup. Quadzillas customer service is great (QZilla monitors this site and is always willing to help) and the price is right.

I would read the articles on the Smarty, the 3rd gen version isnt out yet but from looking at the 2nd gen posts, its seems to be a great tuner.
I had an edge/attitude on my '05, just be aware that boxes and detectable changes to the ecm, may void certain aspects of your warranty of DC can prove they were there.

from what I have been reading with edge, its not that way. It uses its own computer and hooks into the injector harness, map sensor etc... The tripledog is another story. It does hook into the obd2 port and programs the truck via ecm.

I ordered the edge juice kit simply because its well known, the new one has a turbo timer and the attitude monitor is clean and simple.

When I read up on the smarty I got scared of thrashing my tranny. It sounds to me like it makes so much power down low without a tranny upgrade it won't be long before you toast it. But I have to say, it sure sounded like a sweet unit!

the smarty isnt going to be a ton of power...somethin like 90hp i believe. They are more about safety and milage from what I have read

Thanks for the extra info..

The Quadzilla Xzillaraider/Commander looks good.. also supports tranny temp... only problem I see is that it's not actually out yet. (One less guage I have to find a place for) I didn't see pricing on their website for the combo when it hits the street... anyone know anything there?

So while I was hoping to narrow my desicion down.. now I've ADDED one to the mix haha. Though I think I like the idea of an add on box that can be removed without a trace, but I'm not afriad of ECU flashing, I have a modified ECU in my car and it's been great.
