Smarty vs. Edge Juice w/Attitude

I think I've narrowed it down either Smarty or Edge. What are the board opinions? I read a few threads with people waiting to send their Edge boxes back because they were tripping CEL's, but other than that there doesn't seem to be much bad press on either product. I will not be stacking or doing much if any other performance mods (Cold Air and Exhaust, maybe later down the road).

Thanks,

Greg

I'm looking at buying a programmer as well, just to decide between the Smarty and Quad using a Commander for gauges.

In your case, both I think are good products. The Edge has many cool features that the Smarty won't have but the Smarty has things that the Edge doesn't. Just a couple are the fact that the customer service for the Smarty seems superior especially since you can get on here and get an answer fairly quickly. And if your worried about your warranty on your truck, the Smarty is undetectable...

Good luck.

They're actually two different animals. One's a programmer (Smarty) the other's a box (Edge). Power is comparable if you have the Hot Juice. The Smarty can read and clear codes. The Edge has a turbo timer and buit in gauges and safety features. In a head to head race I think the Smarty would probably win. They have better customer service too. Bob Wagner comes on this site quite a bit. I like the idea of a box (Edge) better than a programmer, but the Smarty just has more of what I want plus it's cheaper and has a ton of different programs to choose from.

I have the Edge/Attitude right now, and if I had the money id get a smarty.

A few good points for the edge is adjust on the fly, I love being able to step it up while on the go if I have to. And I orignally bought the edge/attitude combo because I want some sort of guages, EGT/Boost at least(I dont have a'06 so no trans temp on the edge)

Now that I have aftermarket guages I dont use the attitude guages, only shift on the fly for the most part. Another good point for the smarty is more adjustability, more fine tuning for how much power you want to put down.

I think when/if I buy another programmer(after I build the tranny) it will be a smarty.

What year model truck is this Edge Juice/Attitude combo going on?! This matters ALOT for available options on the Edge!

Edge Juice/Attitude has more usable power for a truck that is mostly stock. The smarty has power to build upon, so you cant use all the power levels.

Just because somebody does it, doesnt mean its the right thing to do. He's getting away with it, and may or may not continue to. Your results may vary!

I just removed my Quadzilla Xzillaraider last night, and installed the Smarty #3. Just on the drive to work this morning here is what I noticed in comparison to the XZillaraider:
1) Low end punch much more pronounced.
2) When they say increased timing rattle, they really mean it.
3) #3 on the Smarty (60hp), has more punch to it than my Xzillaraider(s) did on 90 (or is it 100?). With the Quad on it highest setting, I had to power brake to get the rears loose. I broke them loose this morning from a standing start.
4) Cruising up I-5 at 70, my boost numbers maxed at 11. With the Xzillaraider, I would hit 15-17 psi. I havent yet noticed (or even looked) differences in max bost at WOT. I do know that the Quad would trigger the boost alert even on 60hp setting (I have the alert at 36psi I believe). Both times at WOT on the Smarty this morning, it did not flash.
5) Finally, it does appear that the Smarty drops off a little faster as you go up in RPMs. The Quad pulled strong through the entire range.

I probably won't run the Smarty past level 5 on a daily basis.

The truck is an '06 4x4 quad. My friend and I bought trucks at the same time (his is an 07, 5.9), and we're both trying to decide on what to get. A local shop (Salem Boys Auto, in Arizona) used to push the edge stuff, but has since switched to Bully Dog. They said that they had quality issues with Edge???

A local Cummins Tech told us that the factory computer has 2 timmers. One is total engine time and the other resets when the ecm resets (or trips a code, don't remember which...). He said that if there is a difference in the 2 that cannot be explained by a service appointment that they can void the warranty. Does the Smarty somehow reset the timmers?

Thanks,

Greg

If your truck was built after 06/06, the Edge isn't even an option for you.

I don't know about the new programming, but a few months ago, the latest programming for the Smarty was less powerful than my Hot Juice. That may have changed by now. Also, not all trucks respond the same to the same mods. If I were only going to do one thing, it wouldn't be a downloader becuase I like to be able to adjust on the fly. If I was just towing with Smarty on level 3 and had just dropped off my camper and pulled up to a light next to a potential race, I would be very annoyed that I couldn't increase my power level right then and there. For that matter, back to the towing, if my egts start to climb with the Juice I can reach up turn the fueling down. If they start to climb with a downloader, you would have to pull over, get the downloader out and hooked up, and then wait 5 minutes for it to download a new program.

They list 06.5 and 07 on their web site.

Omaha,

you bring up a good point, but the smarty is very appealing for people that still have a warranty, it's undetecable.....
