Smarty Jr...can I put it on my truck without any guages???

I just can't take it anymoreLOL...I want mre power, and am going to put a smarty Jr on.

Truck is a 2005 with the only upgrade being a Rotec sensor. Can I SAFELY add this programmer WITHOUT running guages??

I will add guages, but at this point would rather not. What guages does every one recommend that are absolutely needed. (for when I do additional upgrades)

Thanks for the input.

When you add power to any type of vehicle and don't have any gauges to monitor what's going on, you're asking for problems.

In this case, you do need a egt and trans. temp at the very least. If you get too high on either and don't know it, you'll cook the turbo and trans. which would be $$$$. Wouldn't it be cheaper to install $200 or so worth of gauges??

If your not going to beat on it or continual drag race, you should be fine. You might want to move the rokktec to stock setting to begin with since the Jr. uses timing/duration for power, then adjust accordingly. As far as gauges, go with boost, pyro, fuel if you've got a manual or boost, pyro, trans temp if you've got an auto. For the record I do agree with mpracehemi on the importance of gauges, but I think the Jr. is mild enough ( with sensible driving ) to not hurt your truck.

Some of it might depend on what you use your truck for as well. If you do much towing/heavy hauling then I don't think there's any question that you should have gauges before adding any more power to the truck. If your truck is more of a weekend fun, daily commute (without trailer) kind of truck you might be okay running a Smarty JR w/o gauges on the lower setting . . . still probably wouldn't recommend it though.

Thanks...tow about 3500# at this point maybe once every week or so. Will be getting a 5th wheel in the spring though, and would defineately have guages befor e then.

It was my original plan to get all guages and then a programmer, but I'm anxious for mor power!!!

Oh yeah, and when you your first power mod . . . be prepared financially because you'll want to add more power and upgrades to your truck ASAP. It's a sickness.

As Bob said the Smarty EGT's are lower than stock so no you don't need gauges because anything the Smarty does. You need the guages more on the stock motor than the Smarty motor.

Im not sure I follow. Are you (Bob Wagner) saying that the egts with smarty Jr. on 100 hp setting will be lower than the egts on a stock truck? Or are you refering to the lowest hp setting on Jr.?

Fountain,

It's not all that hard to download the programs. The online instructions aren't the greatest, but if you go with the Sr let me know and I'll walk you through it (as will a number of others on here). It's not hard. You'll get more and better options with the Sr . . . and future ability to go with the Smarty POD.
