smarty help

I will set the scene. I have a couple of tuners but I just been running stock and been waiting for EFI live to come out for my 2003 cummins.

Well last night a guy said he had a smarty he wanted to sell. 100 bucks later I got it. So heck of steal. I have never been around people that programmed their smarty so this is where I need help.

in my sig. you can see my mods. I made the sure the tuner plugged in and worked. I went to software level 4. I didn't mess with the other options.

what do you suggest. the level 4 I noticed nothing at all... so what would be the best parameter settings through all the options...... I am hoping the smarty will get me by until I can get EFI LIVE!!!!!

the smarty is the POD model.

What model Smarty? What version of Smarty software is on the smarty? That will be needed to even know what the Smarty is capable of and if it is even compatible with your truck.

its the smarty s06 pod. catcher software. I bumped it up a little and from stage 4 to stage 6 I noticed the difference. I wasn't impressed with the catcher 4 but 6 I was happy.

but would still like to hear some input on this unit. not to many people run them in this neck of the woods.

Probably need to see what software you're running as well. It sounds like you have the non-TNT version, the regular revo. I can go in depth, but I'm broke off tonight, just checking the forum before I hit the rack. Shoot me a PM, I'll give you my knowledge on it.

Or, the many other helpful members on this sight can help out

Thanks,

its non-tnt version 4.11. I haven't played with it much. Hopefully tomorrow I can find a recipe that I like. No rush for info. My truck is a sleeper most of the time. it just stinks none of the local shops deal with smarty. One shop pushes only Banks. Another is EFI live and edge and the last choice is drive an hour to G&J diesel but they sell everything but push the PPE. Which I did like the PPE and I do feel its a top of the line programmer but stuff runs to hotttttttttt.

I been skimming through all the paperwork I got with it. I am very curious about the power on demand. im missing that from my edge already.

Looks like you got supporting mods. Put that thing on sw#9, tq#4, pressure#2, and stock timing.

Looks like to me you're still running the stock turbo? If so you really need to upgrade the turbo to see the full potential of your mods. The '03-04's has the HE341 turbo and it's on the small side. Cranking it up produces nothing but super heated air and very little gain.

Don't hold your breath for EFI Live. The '03-05 SCI bussed Cummins is such a low priority it may never happen. You can update your S-06 POD to UDC to have the same benefits as EFI.

well I have played around with the tunes. IT does ok but I am not happy or impressed as everyone talks it up. Might have to stack it with a edge juice.. I had edge ez before but on cruise control the boost went up and down and your head would go forward and back. But for now I can only cross my fingers that efi will figure out the 03 computers...

I will say that the smarty is a smooth tune. The motor idles smooth instead of a knock like other brands....

Are you still running the stock turbo?

If so, like Mikey said above that is your biggest issue-- if you don't have the air to support the fuel...

Go to the MADS website, download the TNT programming to your smarty and see the difference. Understand that is the race programming and use all due caution. I say that because while you have stix, I don't see turbo, valve springs, head studs or any other supporting mods to handle the extra power involved.

Set up your computer so you can have the different files available to you and switch back and forth as you like.

On the POD, you can connect/disconnect as you like after setting the input.

However, if you're not impressed with the power you are getting, I am not sure why you would want to set the POD at 80 and derate the power at hand?

I can also tell you affirmatively that for the 03-04 trucks there is not another programmer as good as smarty. Not PPE, not BD, and not edge. The closest any one really came was the old Diablo Predator with custom tuning. EFI live could change that dynamic, but it doesn't appear likely to happen.

And these are all dyno and track results, not seat of the pants feel.

Thanks soulezoo... A new turbo is very soon.{like a few months soon}. I got to get the cable to download and upgrade off the net.

I understand a new turbo will help a lot. I was just expecting more from the smarty.. and the EGTS are a little higher. I have see other programmers do more with a stock truck but everyone just tears them up of course.... My work truck got EFI live with the 50hp tune I am just so happy with. my truck is 12000 pounds and does it wonders. it spools up quick and fuel MPG went through the roof.

More cool air

I agree with Mikey B about your turbo. If you cannot supply more cool air you are flogging a dead horse. I installed a HTB2 (62/12) and the Smarty really helped the engine out. I occasionally tow moderately heavy and really like this turbo with the Smarty S-06 POD. This combination also makes for a good daily driver.

Like you I would like to see what EFI Live will offer if anything for our early model CR CTDs.

Smarty doesn't have the top end power like the Edge does but it runs waaay cooler.

For a turbo, i put on an II 62/65/14 and i love it. I pulled a backhoe, hoe and trailer gcvw of 21k, and the turbo never missed a beat, even through town. I had a 62/71/14. And it was just too laggy around town. Both turbos do great at freeway speeds. I have the S-06 also, and you just need to play with the tunes on it to find the best power for your towing solution. I was running sw7 and all the rest on option 3. Way to smokey for around town with the hoe behind. Turned the rail pressure down helped clear the air a lot, and the inj. Timing too. It is deff. The best tuner I've owned and will never go back to any orher
