swapping your 48re for a g56 isnt the answer. couple more tranny mods and getting your launches down will get you in the low 13s, maybe 12s. dont get me wrong there are some fast 6 speeds out there, but a built auto for racing in these trucks is your best bet.
Its a 2wd he was launching in 2nd with 30psi in tires the truck just spins a wheel hops until 4th. He hopes to get a set of caltracs on it an go back soon an see if that helps. A 2wd 6sp and 4wd auto are two total different animals I've owned both an the 4x auto is alot faster with way less mods.
I am thinking of a G56 for the price and reliability. I cannot afford a completely built 48RE. Swapping in a G56 would be alot cheaper.

He has a HT turbo,II stix,BDDL, along with 5"ex,and S&B intake don't get me wrong from 40mph on up that things moves but if your wanting to race your truck keep the auto. I know building an autos not cheap but neither is a dualdisk that will hold 3rd gear launchs.
I was pricing installing a brand new G56 in my truck and it breaks down like this:
G56 $3336 (new)
SBC clutch/flywheel/hydraulics CON FE $1350 (new)
clutch pedal assembly
hydraulic assembly $70 (new)
driveshaft $239 (new)
$5000 for a G56 conversion. And I could sell my current trans for $1000.
So $4000 to convert to an all new G56 or $6000 for a built auto.
I am a little turned off on building an auto right now too because I just got a quote for $4500 for converter, flexplate and billet input installed. Thats over $1500 for install. What?! If I go with a built auto I will get ripped off somehow. I must have "sucker" in my voice. If I went with a G56 I could do it all myself, and I feel like it would be more reliable in the end. But then I lose a full second on my ET. But then again, I mostly want a fun street driver.


Who knows. Too much $$$ either way.

I see the Con FE is good for 550hp, I wonder if that can take 3rd gear launches? That is only $1350.

You can get a built auto for less than 6k. Mine was just over 4k for TC, VB, FP, BI, BO, and a few other misc internal parts. That price also included installation and tax.
I would do some shopping around before you jump into the swap project and then end up with a slower truck. It sounds like you enjoy racing and I think you would be disappointed with the outcome. For about the same money (and NO LABOR!) you can have a nicely built auto.
Just keep your auto and keep your foot out of I started a transmission fund account at my bank and told XTREMEFLOW not to let me order anything unless It has to do with my transmission. We shall see how long that lasts.

If you want a 6 speed that bad, save the 4000 or whatever you came up with and just sell your auto and buy a 6 speed in the first place! You'll save money in the end, unless you are really upside down in your truck and trade it in (and get hosed by the dealer of course).

Did your search included 4wd trucks??? I searched for a single cab long bed 4wd 6 speed for a while. I waited around untill one came up for sale close to me, though when I really extended my search, it seamed like there were alot more 4wd than 2wd trucks for sale. I bought my truck only a few weeks ago so my info isn't all that outdated. Where are you located??

There's no way you're gonna do an auto to manual conversion w/o a donor truck. There's so many big parts like entire steering coulumbs, carpet, center consoles, shifters, and probably over $1K in nivkle and dime parts. Also you left out the price of a DD clutch because I can see you out growing the OFE due to the the fact that they can slip off the line if your trying 3rd gear or boosted launches so add another $1K

Most of the new 5.9s have disappeared over the last few weeks, I have been looking for the last month and they dried up the last few weeks. They stopped making 5.9s about 9 months ago.
Doing a manual to an auto conversion would be very hard, lots of little parts. But what is so hard about auto to manual? Why would I replace the steering column? Last I heard the 6spd manual shifter is on the floor.
My truck doesnt have carpet, it is rubber floored. Center console, that couldnt cost that much. Shift lever, what would that cost, $50? What other parts are missing? Isnt the shifter part of the transmission? I agree it would be a pain in the rear, but it wouldnt be that hard. It would be the other way around though.

I think you need to decide what your intentions are for the truck if you want to tow get a 6spd you want to race keep the auto. Its a simple decision you want to slow down atleast a full second to save $500 go ahead but there is alot more involved in doing a swap than pulling one out an sticking another back in.
I thought about changing my auto to a 6speed in my F-350 I had before this truck. Start to research it a little deeper... SlowSixSpeed is right... There are alot of little nickle and dime parts that you are forgeting. Yes you need a steering column, your auto shift lever is stuck to it, isn't it? What are you going to just leave it there? How bout the different pedals you need, clutch slave cylinder, etc... There is alot of stuff. If your that stuck on a 6 speed look around a little and save yourself the $$$ and the pain in the a$$ and buy one that came that way from the factory!!!
